Default 7/8" (22.2mm) round 4140 bar for Croweaters

Not exactly a 'For Sale', I need 1 metre of 4140 described but balk at buying a 6 metre length for the privilege. Proposing if 5 others need same, a group purchase. Obviously if another needed multiples of 1 metre that would work too. The material is in the H & T state, cold rolled/drawn surface finish i.e. not scaly. Price was quoted $21.42/ metre, not sure if that includes GST but it SHOULD. I doubt this would be of interest to interstaters as freight would likely be a deal breaker. I'm in Mt Pleasant, would collect the 6m bar & Pay. I can cut to length (bandsaw). Pick-up is preferred but delivery (by me) to addresses within 50 km of Mt Pleasant possible. First 5 metres spoken for sets things in motion & is the cut-off too.

I’d be in for a couple of metres. When are you looking at purchasing?
Depending on timing you may be able to slice a bit off and collect my coin on the way through if yo go via Tea Tree Gully.

I'm in for a couple of metres as well. I'm happy to pick up from Mt. Pleasant.

Hi Guys, that was quick! Only one metre not accounted for. At this rate I'll probably buy on Wednesday, I'm a bit tied up till then.

Well, it looks like we're all set. I'll pick the steel up on Wednesday, cut it on Thursday because Wednesday is going to be a long, full day. We can sort out the logistics, contacts, etc Thur/Fri. I must say thanks chaps, not that I couldn't afford the full bar, it's a matter of principle. I'm doing a restoration, an auction 'win' bought sight unseen .. never again, well only twice since & not stung on those. Anyway I've sunk more than I wanted into this 'project' & refused to invest any more in it.

Hi chaps, steel pick-up went without a hitch except one, wouldn't you know it, price quoted was WITHOUT GST. I thought that has been illegal for several decades? Never mind, it now works out at $23.60/metre in round numbers. Steel is cut & ready to go. Now I looked at everyone's profile .. all in Adelaide, covers a bit of ground. Might I suggest you toss in your suburb, in this thread & we work out a strategy. A thought I had for consideration .. maybe one of you could act as 'bag man', collect the dosh on the way thro' (by the way I won't have change, hardly ever have cash) & meet up with me at a mutually convenient halfway point, distribute the pieces on the return journey. I only just realised I've put in ~ 100km today doing the pick-up - not whining, I just seldom think of travel, living up here it's part & parcel, but it does use fuel. A bright note .. pun intended .. it turned out to be peeled bar (I think), so very clean, in fact initially I thought they'd stuffed up & given me centreless ground.
KB: not worth a pic mate, it's just shiny steel bar.

Pricing ex-GST is still fairly common for commercial (non-retail) purchases.

    From the ACCC site:
When you present prices to your customers, you must state the total price of the good or service as a single figure, which is the minimum total cost that can be calculated. This should include any tax, duty, fee, levy or other additional charges (for example, GST or airport tax).

    Exceptions:

this rule does not usually apply in business-to-business transactions. This means you do not need to include GST if a price statement is made exclusively to businesses.

I'm at Aberfoyle Park but I'm happy to come to Mt. Pleasant to pick up - good excuse for a drive, just need to know when you are available - weekends are fine with me if that makes it easier.

I start nightshift tomorrow, earliest I could get up to Mt Pleasant is the weekend after next. Happy to forward money to your bank account if you PM the details.

Im seeing a bit of a future for this type of purchase, particularly in Adelaide where you can’t just go buy 1/2m lengths like you can in some other capitals. If anyone finds themselves in a similar position put a post up.

Gavin, I have PM'd you. Tadpole, no sweat there's no hurry this end. I'm surprised this kind of process isn't more common given the situation re small quantities of metal in SA. Surman are very good for non-ferrous & cast iron. This lot came from Vulcan & to be fair they said they cut 31.75mm diam bar & larger .. in fact a while back they quoted me for a slab of 195 diam 1045 only 25 thick & price was reasonable but I got it quite a bit cheaper from Tassie even with the freight.
