Default SA - Fred Herbert Drill Press

Offering up the English made Fred Herbert drill press I purchased in 2012 that I had planned to restore. Unfortunately I have down sized in workshop size since that purchase and don’t have the room for it. So my lack of space is someone else’s gain (hopefully).

The unit has AESCO plant tags on which means it came from Adelaide Electric Supply Co, which then became the Electricity Trust of SA. That change occurred sometime in the 40’s which would date the drill sometime around the late 30’s or early 40’s possibly, maybe a bit later if they were using old tags.

It is a very solid unit and everything works, although the 3phase motor it has with it is in need of new bearings, this is in pieces after taking it to a rewinder for assessment and them quoting we don’t want the work prices. The quill runs up and down smoothly, although you can feel the gear movement in the first 1.5” of operation so it’s probably safe to assume some wear on the first part of the tooth engagements. The quill shaft rotates very smoothly and shows no sign of play or wear when spun in either direction. The dovetails for the table show no visible signs of wear and the table operation was smooth when fitted, although the ratchet was a little sticky as the lubricant on it had gummed. The flood coolant trays come with it, although there was no pump of any description when I purchased it so I am unsure of the coolant pumping arrangement it may possibly have had.

The table measures 450x500 with a work holding area of 335x395. Overall height of the machine from bottom of the base to top of the quill shaft is 2025mm. A rough guess would put the weight at around 250kg.

The grid tapped plate visible on the table is not included with the sale.

I would like $250 for this grand old machine. Delivery in Adelaide is negotiable as is palleting for a trip interstate, freight is at purchasers cost.

Photos to follow as soon as I figure out why VBulletin won’t upload.

    Josh Dude,

I removed your mobile phone number OK?.

You are leaving yourself wide open for a scam attack similar to what is happening all over Australia at the moment.

An overseas (landline) number appears on your phone as a missed call and should you not notice and dial it it -Australia's dial prefix is +61- you end up paying an exorbitant overseas call fee on your mobile telephone bill.

I suggest you PM the OP to avoid this hassle.

    Grahame Dude
