Default A few 260 attachments to add to my collection

    Hi All

I was lucky enough to come across some bits and pieces for the 260, I found a guy that was willing to sell me his attachments he has never used that had come with his lathe, his lathe came from the CSIRO and was quite well equipped.

In the lot there was a Turret, form/parting slide, travelling steady, taper turning attachment and he also sold me a dividing head with the 3c collet attachment for the milling attachment with 2 extra division plates being 36 and 48.

The turret has never been used as it is still 5/8" bore diameter and I remember reading that is how they were sent out so you could bore them to your machine.

It was also interesting to see that the inch per feet scale was left off of the 260 taper attachment.

On a side note though is it was interesting to compare the parting slide and the taper attachment from the 9" to the 260, they are almost identical except the saddle bracket on the 260 taper slide has the hole in it for the stop shaft to go through for the micro switch and obviously the cross slides are different heights but you could always pack up the tool post if you were to fit a 9" taper attachment on the 260, same as the parting slide, it is pretty well identical except the stops are on the opposite sides but that can always be milled out to fit a 9" slide on the 260 and the tool post height will be different but that isn't a big job to make a couple of new units to replace them, also the turret attachment is the same on the main slide part except that to fit a 9" unit to a 260 you would need to make a new stud and taller turret head or add a bit to the bottom of the 9" to lift it up, there is a little bit of work in that one but it is definitely achievable.

    Hi Steve,

Nice score there ! I'm a bit envious about the tailstock turret, a very useful bit of kit.

The ever growing collection Steve !!!

Hercus changed the design of the turret attachment with the introduction of the 260. Apart from it being taller they revised the spring loaded turret detent mechanism. The 9" version has gib type adjustment screws that I have found extremely difficult to adjust. The issue being that if they are too tight the detent plunger binds and doesn't slide completely into the detent and if too loose the resulting play prevents the accurate indexing of the turret.

If you ever get around to having a fiddle with the turret and if you remove the detent mechanism's cover plate, any chance of a photo of what you encounter?

I've had mine for fourteen years and never found cause to use it. My friend Bruce "Abratool" however has his permanently mounted on his 260 with his tailstock modified with a quick release setup for when he not using the turret. These days I imagine Bruce uses his turret to churn out replacement parts for his flash red MG!!!

As acquired in 2008 complete with nice porch paint job...

Thanks Bob, one day I may actually catch up to you with the amount of Hercus attachments you seem to have in your collection .

I will take the cover off and take a few photos, it looks like it could be a self adjusting set up with the spring loaded taper gib, the turret is quite stiff and the guy I purchased it from oiled it up before it was picked up but he said it was still a bit stiff to operate still so just needs a good clean, Would imagine it just has some old dried oil residue in there.

I was actually in the process of making a new turret head for one of my 9" turrets to convert to to a 260 size, I have started to make the stud and the turret but I will abandon that now and probably just sell the turret attachment now.

    Bob.
Good to hear about your Hercus parts Bob
I have not been using my Turret Attachment for some time as dont seem to have enough repetitive jobs to justify the set up needed.
Did make some 5/16" UNF 24 tpi locating studs for the MGB recently.
Have been working with 19yr old grandson on his Uni project, a see thru toaster of all things!
While he was here, I demonstrated some real engineering.. hand scraping a cast iron surface plate, & was reminded it has been 10 yrs since I was with you in Melb on the Scraping Course.
Time seems to move fast as one gets older !

Well Bob, it has taken a while but I finally have taken a couple of photos of the turret mechanism on the 260.

I have also made use of the taper turning attachment, I have started to make 4MT to 4c and 3c collet closers, I will be going down the path of getting them hardened and ground as per the original ones.

Where will you get the internal grinding done?

I will probably do it myself as I can get access to a cylindrical grinder with internal grinding

Well there you go, a tapered gib hence the absence of screws.

Thank you for the photos Steve.
