Hercus 260G Milling Attachment
No, not a milling machine.
The complete original milling attachment tooling available included a vertical slide, machine vise and a simple indexing head. The milling attachment vertical slide replaces the tool post, this vertical slide accepts either the vice or a simple dividing head that work piece is held in. This simple dividing head has a 3MT and uses a C collet via a 3MT to C Collet adapter to hold the work so that it can be indexed. Rigidity is not one of its virtues. I bought a Tee-Slot Cross Slide for the times I'll need extra capacity or rigidity (within the machine tools limitations) and will remove and replace the taper turning attachment and its cross slide when I want to use it. I have a second vertical milling attachment slide that I'll machine the base and mount to a plate with key to locate in the Tee-Slot Cross Slide for extra rigidity when I want to take slightly heavier cuts or use tougher material in the indexing head.
Yes a cutting tool held in the headstock by either a chuck or collet is independant of the simple indexing head. I have a set of imperial Hardinge 4C collets that I am looking for a 4MT to 4C adaptor to hold tools or work pieces in the headstock. I agree that ER40 have a wider range and are easier to get but I'd prefer original attachments for the lathe and I already have the 4C Collets. I'll get cheap ER40 collets and a chuck at some point.
I'd like a smaller Milling Machine for home but don't have the space at the moment.

Hi Graeme
I have taken some photos and added dimensions for the draw tubes if you need to make them, Not sure if you will find any originals of these but you never what people have in their sheds and are willing to part with.
The dimensions are in metric but these would be imperial sizes originally and the only real critical dimension would be the thread, overall length could vary a little bit either way and wouldn't make much difference
I have made a few 3c draw tubes for my 0 mill out of 20 mm tube with 2.5 mm wall thickness and then made a spigot to go on the back for the step and to hold the handle.
As for thread dimensions for the collets I looked around on the net for the collet dimensions but I can't find where I found the info now but its out there.
I have added photos of the handle I made for the 0 mill spindle draw tube as they went with a different style on the later mills with notches instead of knurled finish.

OK, now I see what you mean. I'm not lucky enough to have the dividing head.
That's what I have done. I have a Myford milling attachment that bolts directly to the slots in the cross-slide. I also made an adaptor so I can mount the Hercus milling attachment to the slots too. But I usually just use the Myford one. I also have a 200mm angle plate that provides more rigidity (but no vertical movement) when needed.Chris
