Default 9inch Hercus Precision Lathe query

    Hi,

I'm new here but I have a question regarding a 9inch Hercus Precision Lathe.

My father has one in his shed, unfortunately he has hit the point in his life where he needs to move to a retirement village. He had been using it for making bits and pieces for restoring cars and model steam trains. He asked me if I wanted it but I have no room for it. Instead I have told him I will sell it for him. I really have zero idea about the lathe and its value or even the best place to advertise it for sale.

I was wondering if someone could let me know the rough value of these, he really doesn't have any interest in the money so I guess I would like to try to move it on as quickly as possible, is just putting it on ebay as an auction worthwhile?

    Thanks

You don't happen to have a friend of the family with a mechanically minded teenage child. If money is not your goal which is great it could be sold at a very good price and help someone on there way to a life long love of machining.

Price depends on condition and tooling supplied with it.

There was an auction on eBay over the last week for a Hercus A that was around 2000 serial numbers younger than yours, it went for $910 in clean but non running (motor not wired) condition.

At a minimum at the moment, a clean working unit with original accessories (chucks, faceplates etc) are in the region of 1500-2000. If it’s minimal wear, very tidy, a bit more. If it has a load of accessories with it such as cutting tools, drill chucks, measuring equipment etc higher still.

Having said that, there is a fully restored Myford on Gumtree here in Adelaide at 4K with a bunch of extras that’s been there for over 6months.

    I'll second that.

If you want to move it real quick $500, if fairly quick $1000 and quick $1200/$1500.

As said above tooling makes all the difference.

See if you can get an inventory or photos of the extra bits.

I bought mine maybe a decade ago so my experience is not relevant to the current market, but I paid $950 for an average condition early machine with all standard tooling and bits etc. Mine is a small dial machine. I looked it up years ago and I think it's 40's or something.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

If you wish to sell your lathe here on the forum you will need to place it in the Market sub forum.

    https://metalworkforums.com/f223

Please make time to read the sticky covering what are the requirements specified to sell your equipment.

While it is there the equipment is advertised in the Market place it must not advertised else where.ebay ,gumtree etc.

    READ THE STICKY OK!
