Hercus 9 vs Sheraton 9 vs Southbend 9 centre heights?
I read somewhere that the Sheraton 9 was nominally 1/8" higher than the Hercus 9? What about the Southbend? Can anyone enlighten me? I've been searching for the info but cannot find it again. Thanks.

Still been looking and can't find anything. But I am sure I read somewhere that the centre height on the Sheraton was 4 5/8 whereas the Hercus was 4 1/2. But following on from a conversation I had with someone recently I have a feeling I could be chasing after the proverbial furphy water cart.
I do have access to both a Sheraton and Hercus, though neither have a tailstock and I'll need to figure out how to accurately measure the center height , and I'm not exactly certain that the headstock on the Sheraton is original, but I suppose I shall start looking for clues.
Why do I find I need to precisely know such things?

Problem being that neither machine is a going concern with key bits missing from each. I am trying to make a working machine out of the bits that I have collected.
I could put something pointy in the chuck, or a centre in the spindle and measure down to the top of the flat way.
My second trade is as an electronics technician. An inquisitive mind is probably the answer to my own question and makes for a good tech, I was actually taught to be that way in my trade. The real reason was that I wondered about compatibility of parts between the two makes. But my mind gets caught up on such things and so I agree that you are right in a way!

If you have access to both machines then why don't you put something flat across the ways and measure from the top or bottom of the thread on the spindle down and compare the difference, at least you will solve it if there is a difference between the height.

You're going to need a tailstock. I can't see any way around that. Here's a Hercus one: https://australianmetalworkinghobbyi...product_id=131

Thanks kindly for the info Mal. Maybe I can find the Sheraton drawing or a spec sheet on the internet somewhere (I have been googling, but it just came to front memory (if that is a thing) that some of the fb social media groups have file download areas I could check)
Thanks, I've been in touch with Mal about some other bits a few months ago, very nice site, nice guy to talk to, just its a long term project, I start a new job in January but it has been a dry stretch for the last few months so have been held up on the project due to these kind of constraints. But will get there.

centre height
That height I gave you is from the flat way the forward edge of the tailstock sits on.

Today I had access to both machines, if anything, the Hercus may have been approx 1/32" higher than the Sheraton, (rough measurement with a tape measure) so likely they are nominally the same height, perhaps comes down to my tape measure inaccuracy or maybe there is a small difference but a lot less than the 1/8" that I had read about. So most likely the reference I had seen citing 1/8" difference in centre height was a furphy. Thanks guys for the thoughts and for the information from Mal.
