QCTP on hercus 9. With the compound removed.
Hi all. First post here so please be gentle.
I have a wedge type QCTP that I would like to install on my hercus 9. I want to remove the compound for extra rigidity, but have the option to re install it should I need to.
Has anyone done this and if so, how? Pictures would be great.

I have done this to my Hercus.
I used a round block of steel, 100mm in diameter and the same thickness as the compound.
I made the base of the block of steel to the same dimensions as the bottom of the Hercus compound so that I can go between the two if needed.
I think the bolt that holds the QCTP on is 14mm and I have 2 positions for it incase I run out of travel for larger diameter work.
I got the idea from Stefan G and I think it works well.
I went for the larger diameter looking for more surface contact.

Have not done it, but 'tis an interesting idea.
It guess sort of depends on the size of your QCTP block?
My block is 45mm high, so there is no way I could get tools to centre height without a large block/pillar/spacer for it to sit on (to make up the missing height of the compound slide)
I would machine something like this:
Hercus compound removal.jpg
Left drawing is partial cutaway. Basically, a big fat pin with a flange that hooks under the cross slide casting, and a big spacer for the top, that the QCTP sits on.
Note 1: Cross slide casting might need to be milled flat underneath, so there is a good solid surface for the pin to be pulled up against (I can't remember what mine looks like under there).
Alternative is a dense resin like Devcon
Note 2: Big pin could be made shorter by just having a cap screw on top, instead of the close fitting pin inside the QCTP, and the handle thread on top of it. Only a little less rigid.
ignore this earlier drawing...

Yes. Here you go: https://metalworkforums.com/f189/t20...ighlight=solid
I have a slotted cross-slide. You won't be able to ustilise T-nuts for extra rigidity. But a solid toolpost mount with just the spigot will be much more rigid than the compound.Chris
