    Default Expanding 5C collet collection

For want of something better to do, I just decided to post a picture of my collection of 5C
    expanding collects.
There are two basic types; Rovi collets and Royal type clones.

I have used some of the Rovi collets for making nickel silver reel seat hardware for my bamboo fly rods. This entails making a cap and ring by boring, profiling, fine knurling and finishing.

The Royal clones I use to make the brass fittings for the fly rod tubes. Tubes are aluminium with a closed brass cap and an internal threaded cap and a matching external threaded collar that fits on the other end of the tube.

I know this sounds bad but what do you hold the collets in?

The Rovi collets are hard to get but what I like about them is that they allow inserts of several sizes to be housed in the body of the collet. Which means cheaper inserts of varying sizes can be bought giving the collet body more versatility.

All the Rovi collets are second hand but that's the only way I can get them as Rovi in California doesn't post or do business with Australia.
However they are very well made and have very good concentricity.

Sounds like a reasonable question to me.

The easiest way is to show you.

The spindle nose has a 5C adapter inserted into it. Below you can see a collet inserted into the adapter.

To draw the collet in a draw tube the length of the internal spindle bore is inserted and screwed in to draw the collet into the adapter; a wheel on the end allows tightening to bring the collet into the spindle adapter

God knows why some pictures are on their side; I don't know how to fix them.

If anyone has any collet details to show, post them so we can learn something or, just be entertained.

    Hi Andre,

What is a replaceable pad 5C collet?

    Can you post a photo?

It has replaceable pads that you machine to suit different IDs.

Thanks for posting the photo. Is it an expanding collet or an outside collet?

Now I understand the idea but I have a question. Do the cap screws only hold the pads in place or do they also allow OD adjustment within a range or is OD achieved by turning down to a desired spec like other expanding collets?

Hardinge collets are good quality gear, I have quite a few myself. But I do have others also that are US made.

Do you have a photo with the pads removed from the main body?

    Hi Boris,

The pictures contain EXIF information that is inserted into the picture by the camera when you took the photograph ! This information is used to orientate the picture based on the camera position. You need to remove the EXIF information ! The easiest way to do this is by editing the picture and re-saving it. I normally just crop the picture and save it over the original. You can then rotate the picture if you need to without it being rotated by the forum software.

Thanks for the tip, Baron J.

I remember that for next time.
