    Default Hercus 260 belt replacement.

I just replaced the link-belt back to V-belt recent as the link belt seems to be too stiff (it came with the lathe when I bought it). I decided to go the the automotive notched belt rather than the banded V-belt. I am not too sure how long it will last if there is oil present but that seems much more smoother to run especially on the small pulley selection. The tension lever is much lighter as well.

I bought the A28 banded too just in case. I think I would replace with the 13A-750 again if is lasts more than 5 years.

    G’day Trong,
I put notched Bosch fan belts on my 260 when I fixed it up over ten years ago and the oil hasn’t affected them. They will slip if the load gets too much but this hasn’t been a problem for normal operation even taking heavy cuts. It’s makes a good circuit breaker if a tool jams though so I like it that way.
I also agree with you that they’re quieter and smoother than link belts.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

You guys are getting oil on the belts of your 260s? I rarely oil the gears in the headstock. They have a thin film of oil on them and the belt is bone dry. I oil the gear train under the side panel more regularly. That belt is also dry. Maybe I'm not oiling enough, but I figure any oil that flings off is, by definition, excess.

I fitted a notched belt to my modified pedestal drill and it dramatically reduced the vibration.

    Hi Chris,

If you don't use the back gear at all then it is ok I guess otherwise you would have to lubricate the back gear, also undo the crews to drop the oil in for the shafts too. Oil also flows out from the bearings on the inside maybe I added too much?
