Default Cutting imperial threads on a metric 260

    G’day Folks

I’ve been asked if I can help with a project that’s interstate and I’m trying to work out how I might go about it. It’s a “love job” so I don’t want to break the bank.

When I get there I won’t have access to all my usual tools. Most of what I will have should still be ok because apparently no-one has used them since I was last there. I can bring things with me of course but I don’t want to be carting too much around; certainly nothing I can’t lift myself.

One way to solve the issues involved will be to rebuild broken parts. However, some of these will have imperial threads and the lathe I know I will have easy access to will be a metric Hercus 260.

I was hoping someone here might be able to help me with some of the questions I have?

Are change gears available for the hercus 260 metric model to allow imperial thread cutting?

If so what range would they give?

What do they cost and where might I get them?

Assuming the machine is still up to spec is there any accuracy compromise involved?

Is there good reference material available on this that I could download (or purchase) so I can minimise the trial and error in setting up?

thanks to any who can assist!

Do a search for Hercus thread chart, it will have the information you need.

    They certainly are! https://australianmetalworkinghobbyi...product_id=175

pipeclay can explain how they are used. I wouldn't have clue.

That will depend on which model 260 they have. ATM, BTM, CTM, DGM, etc. Different gears required for different models. What threads do you have to cut, no point spending more than you need on the gear set.

If you mention which 'interstate' you are going to, there may be a member who could assist and save you having to cart as much gear.

ok, thanks, I spent a couple of hours going through the threads that came up in that search. I’m going to need to read them more than once I think. It’s not making a heap of sense yet!

I had a look at the metalworking hobbyist site too, thank you. So, I feel that the basic answer is yes. However, the arcanum of how to make the right levers do what I want isn’t quite there.

I can’t remember which 260 it is. Somewhere there’s an old photo so I’ll examine that.

I’d be in country Tasmania, about half an hour out of Devonport.

I’d like to be able to do this but I want to be absolutely certain that I will finish before I start!

    Default gearbox settings

If the machine is an ATM the gearbox handles and gears need to be set as follows, so the handles would be placed in the holes below column 2 for the lefthand handle and below B on the righthand handle.

    Default 260atm

If you aren't familiar with the machine, this naming diagram will help.

Not sure if this is any help to you but I did this post with the lay out of the gears and the lever positions to hopefully take out some of the confusion when setting up compound gears for cutting the different metric on an imperial lathe or imperial on a metric lathe

Compound gear configurations on 9" model A lathes

It covers all model A lathes

I know you want to go from metric to imperial but this video may help with using a thread chasing dial for metric to imperial or in the reverse.
