Model 0 Vertical Head bearing temp
I have dug up what previous threads I can on running temperatures of the bearings in the vertical head of Model 0 mill. It seems that they do run rather hot.
My question is while the temps noted in the threads may not be ideal, what are the limits? Given the Hercus Mills were designed the way they are, it would seem they have been operating at the temps they do since manufacture. At what point of temp should one worry?
My test run time of 5 mins @ 1400 rpm fro 35 to 41 C 10 minutes upto 43 c

Hi TH,
Whilst my mill is not a Hercus, it does use a pair of tapered bearings at each end of the spindle, they get warm but not hot ! It might pay you to strip clean and re-lubricate them. When I sorted mine out I used a lithium based wheel bearing grease, the old stuff was like a thick toffee making the spindle hard to turn by hand. Washing them out in white spirits cleaned them nicely.
Don't repack the bearings full ! Only about 50% is needed.
HTH.Best Regards:
