If the thread you cut was not 1.5 but what was set on the gearbox you may not of been able to drop in anywhere.

Success!
But I can't figure out what caused the problems before except your suggestion, Pipeclay.
But that means I had something askew in my settings because this time I still just dropped in without reference to the thread dial and I did open the halfnuts at the shoulder.

Task complete, finally finished the caps to go with them.

Actually, it was learning exercise cutting an internal thread into a blind hole and finishing the outside.

Hi Boris, Guys,
If the thread being cut is a multiple of the leadscrew then you can drop in anywhere ! This applies to an imperial machine and I assume metric as well.
Cutting threads in a blind hole, its safer to cut from the inside out away from the chuck.
Anyway from the pictures it looks to be all good.Best Regards:

quite correct, the line was repositioned later, as shown on the current new plates.
