Hercus 260 quick change tool post and tool size
Hi guys,
I’m pretty new to all this, so apologies if I use incorrect terminology.
I’ve just bought a Hercus 260atm and I’m going to install a QCTP. I’m thinking I might get the one from Ausee Machinery linked below, but it’ll only take 12mm tools. I was hoping, however, to use indexed tools with a 16mm shank; I’m not sure why, I just thought the larger shank would be more rigid and provide a better cut.
My question is; is there any issue with using 12mm tools or should I look for tool holders that’ll accept a larger shank? What size is best for the Hercus 260?
The measurement from the Centre of chuck to compound slide is 30mm so I’m pretty sure the Hercus will accept larger tools.
Thanks for any advice,
Shaun.

Hi Shaun and welcome to the forum.
I am not saying for sure but hazard a guess and would say the 260 in the Hercus Model name means 260mm swing or 10 3/8".
If so, a larger tool post would suit the 260 hercus
https://www.ausee.com.au/shop/item.aspx?itemid=4252
read down that page for info on sizing
The problem is that the toolpost would fit but at the same time it is also made to fit fit larger lathes.
I would question if the Hercus 260 is substantial heavy enough to endure the load that COULD be placed on it.
I only had a a few hours on a Hercus 260 so I don't feel able to advise on aspect. However some Hercus owners will be along soon enough.

Welcome.
12mm tools are fine, but 16mm holders give you more options. You can buy 16mm holders. I have plenty of them. Look for AXA 250-101XL.
It would be worth confirming that the set in question it compatible with an Aloris AXA QCTP. If so, AXA tool holders from any supplier will fit.
I notice Ausee is out of stock.Chris

Oh no, I didn’t notice they were out of stock! I was hoping to order them tonight.…
I might have to get a decent quality one. Any suggestions? And what does AXA relate to? Is it a standard or a brand name…?
Thanks for the replies.

AXA is the size. This might be another option. http://mag-pro.com.au/goods.php?id=221
His postage through the website is extortionate. Apparently you will get a better deal on postage if you email him. I think he also has the 16mm holders. I haven’t bought from him, but other people on the forum reckon he’s OK.
Decent quality? Well other than the Chinese ones, your options are genuine US made Aloris or Dorian. I have an Aloris AXA size QCTP, but I use Chinese holders. I can’t see the value in the genuine holders. The Aloris QCTP is lovely.Chris

I agree Chris. I have an AXA (250-100) copy from OZMESTORE on eBay on mine. Best deal I could find on them during these covid times of slow boats from China. I think the BXA (250-200) would be too big for the 260, they are significantly bigger than the AXA.
The 250-101XL toolholder are the go. Harder to find though. The other option to to use a mill if you have one and make the opening a little larger on the standard tool holders as long as it still has enough rigidity with the remaining material.

Yeah, I ordered from M&G because his website said they were in stock, but I received an email stating he’d contact me when they arrived. I might just bite the bullet and order an Aloris and use aftermarket holders. Or I spoke to Mal today and he’ll have some in December that include the tool post stud which would be good.…

I just bought a 250-111 tool post from the US because no one here had one in stock. About $110 for the post and around $50 in freight and duty. Worked out about a third of the price of a genuine Aloris.

16mm tool holders
Excuse my late reply to this post and the blattent advertising. Apart from a more rigid 16mm boring bar (which you can't use in tight bores), I can't really see the point of using larger than 12mm. The kind of cuts requiring more rigid tools aren't within the capacity of the Hercus machines. You need to remember these machines originally used 1/4" HSS tools quite efficiently. If you had a machine capable of 12mm cuts, I could see the point but the extra cost of the larger tooling seems like a waste. Even my heavy Index-Werke cam auto, making fairly heavy cuts, only uses 8mm tool steel. I have added the 12mm version of the AXA-100 (piston style) to the AMH website again, after several years without it, this is the correct size for the machine, the BXA-200 is too big for the Hercus. I use the same tool post on all my Hercus 9 and 260 lathes.

Haven't been here for a long time but for my two bobs worth the 12mm holders are fine.
I use mostly CCMT/CCGT 0602 inserts for steel, aluminium and brass etc and have no problems.
The trick is to learn what inserts to use and practice to get the feed and speed right.Preferably before you get to the last cut on the job.
