Headstock Removal on model c
I went to remove the headstock on my model c with cast iron bearings today.
I did a lot of reading about the method and was prepared with a hammer and hardwood.
I did everything suggested but when I went to knock the headstock out, it came out with a bump of the hand?
I checked all surfaces and they all look good.
It does leak oil from the front bearing though.
Did I just get lucky with the removal or would it be because of wear?
It snugs back up nicely and seemed to run nice and true whilst not getting hot.
Cheers
Andrew.

Not sure. Mine was not that easy to take out but some gentle repeated taps with a plastic hammer was all it took to remove.
Have you measured the spindle play with it back together?

Some of it will be dependent on how tight the spindle is through the Bull gear.

I out put a length of copper pipe in the spindle about 500mm beyond the end of the spindle and pushed down and pulled up with reasonable force. Got 0.004mm with mine which is just about at max spec I think.
Mine needs to be reduced a bit but it only really shows as a problem when taking heavy cuts. My max cuts generally are 0.025” which is more than enough for what I do.

I checked with a bar and dial indicator.
I'm getting 0.04mm front and back.
I'm not leaking from the rear bearing but the front is.
Can anyone please advise on the acceptable tolerance on the cast iron bearings?

Headstock Removal on model c
I think that’s the top end of clearance as 15 thousandths is considered top end I think.
Easy to remove the shim pack, take out a thin shim and replace with something suitable to get back to spec.
I will likely aim for 0.02mm when I do mine. Tighten the bolts on the head so it gets warm but not hot.

Wouldn't worry to much if you have oil leaking from the front and there will be all leaking from the rear.
Can you explain what you meant front and back? You generally test in the vertical position.
Generally, .0005" to .0015" should be a reasonable clearance, by no means adjust to remove all leaking oil.

By front and back, I just meant I extended the bar out the chuck side of the spindle, checked the measurements, then extended out the other and checked.
All up and down movements with the bar.
I wasn't very clear with my description.
I won't bother with all oil leaks but i found it had no wicks in a lot of it.
That might help.

Mine does exactly the same btw. Runs out the front bearing and can’t see where it’s running out the rear
I just keep it topped up all the time.
Also means it’s always oily so I wipe the machine with a rag and spread it around. I call it a “feature”... spindle lubrication and machine rust prevention.
