That rear mounted DRO seems to have way more travel than necessary for a South Bend 9. My Hercus 260's cross slide has only about 150mm of travel. So I'm thinking a DRO scale with 150mm of travel should suffice. A spring mechanism like the one used on the DRO pictured would prevent damage to the scale in the event of an overrun.

Looking around the web it seems everyone sells 2 or 3 axis kits. Does anyone know where I can get a decent quality DRO kit with just one scale?

Something like this is probably what you are looking for. It is the first one that come up on a google search so may not be the best place to buy.

I just googled igaging digital readout.

Thanks Steve. Well spotted, but I should have been more specific. I'd like something with a more traditional DRO control panel and LED display which could have a second axis added if I decide to do that later. I find the tiny buttons like the ones on that iGaging a real pain to use.

Also, given the amount of work required to mount the scale properly, I'd be looking at something with a higher spec than the iGaging. It's good to know it's available though.

    Cheers

    Maybe these two items together?

It's a 170mm scale. Overall length is 282mm. I have 290mm between the back of my saddle and the splash guard. That's awfully tight. It might have to remain a pipe dream for me.

I would give this place a try. You can buy the readout and scales seperate.

    Hi Steve,
Had a look through this site, looks interesting, especially with the short X scales. Am surprised there are not any folk who have already fitted DRO's.
    Thanks for this.

    Graham,
There's little to no info on fitting a DRO to a Hercus lathe, but there's plenty of threads on fitting a DRO to a South Bend 9 lathe. As far as I can tell, the Hercus and SB9 share identical castings for the bed and saddle. So any info you find should be applicable to the Hercus. I reckon the only practical way to mount the cross slide scale is at the rear. It's going to be in the way if mounted on either side of the saddle.

I've attached a pic I found of an iGaging scale fitted to a SB9.

Please keep us informed of your progress.

Default Scale seems to fit nicely on the rear bed.

    Hi jack620,

Appreciate the information and the picture. It looks like some effort will be required to follow through. I am using a DRO on a modern machine and am trying to learn how to use it more comprehensively (Instruction booklet referred to/snatching a look on the go).
I think it will be worth doing something on the Hercus.

    Thanks,
PS Any comments on a LED type of Lathe light? Presently my lighting is average...on the lathe.
    Cheers.

I have a wall mounted flexible arm LED light I bought at an IKEA store in Hong Kong. I've never seen it for sale here. It's mounted to the splash back and is long enough to reach over the top of the chuck when needed. Also good for shining into a bore.

    Hi Chris, Guys,

I use one of the Ikea lights very similar to the one you linked to. My only objection to it is that it is permanently under power. The switch only breaks the feed to the LED. I make sure to remove the power when its no longer needed.
    Best Regards:

From memory it was like .1mm, I was new to using a lathe and did not probe into it alot, I also thought maybe the machine was a little "light" for the DRO to be successfully used. Since then on my other lathe I use a DTI.
I have since seen this method of attaching the DRO to the cross slide.
I thought it looked good, it has a spring to keep tension in the system.
I have easson DRO's, one on a lathe and one on a mill, out of the box they are actually not that accurate and I suspect very few DRO's are.
To get accuracy the Linear Compensation needs to be adjusted, your manual will explain how to do this.

    Thanks Jack620.

I will have a good look at this, great that you can get the light inside a bore. Is it bright enough?

    Cheers

Just. Brighter would be better. I reckon a good project would be to replace the LED with a 3W CREE or similar. Would probably need a new finned aluminium head to cope with the heat.
