Interesting, thanks. Repeatability being the key issue. I'll give it a try with the dial gauge. There is plenty of backlash in mine, which won't help. I guess I was swayed by the calibrated saddle hand wheel on my modern lathe (which has a DRO, so I rarely read the saddle dial. Such decadence!).
