Is there a brand of DRO that is suited to a 1960's Hercus Lathe?
Hi folks,
I have been trying to use what I have in my workshop a little better and hence the inquiry of fitting a Digital Readout to the little Hercus lathe.
Is there a model / brand of DRO that is suitable? The cross slide looks a little awkward to work with however.
Secondly any suggestions for a brand LED machine light to use on the lathe as well, I may as well see better too.
Thanks

I had fitted a DRO to one of my Hercus lathes sometime ago and I got different numbers when I turned the motor on with the cross slide. I think there may have been a bit of play in the system.
From memory it was like .1mm, I was new to using a lathe and did not probe into it alot, I also thought maybe the machine was a little "light" for the DRO to be successfully used. Since then on my other lathe I use a DTI.
I have since seen this method of attaching the DRO to the cross slide.
I thought it looked good, it has a spring to keep tension in the system.

Thanks for your view and picture.
I had not considered "play" on the cross slide.
Thanks for the picture.
What is a DTI? I am not familiar with this descriptor.

Dial test indicator. Although I suspect he meant dial indicator (DI). A DI is what I use when I need accurate indication of cross slide movement.
A permanent DRO on the cross slide would be nice though. For the work I do I don't think a DRO scale is as necessary on the carriage.Chris

Yes sorry I meant Dial Indicator.
And I got the photo off a Southbend facebook page.
This is a dial indicator off a Southbend, I think it has probably got a magnet on the back to hold it in position

In this picture the long thin device next to the drill chuck is a digital version of a dial indicator. In this instance being used to measure saddle movement.Best Regards:

The bolt up option with supplied fittings is probably no.
Any of the DRO's will work on your lathe.
You will need to customise your fittings.
Backlash in your screws should not be a concern to the DRO, you just need to make sure it's removed before use of the DRO ( by winding handles ).
For most cross slide applications the scale is mounted at the rear of the cross slide
( an extension ). This can be an issue if a splash guard is fitted.
Cost will probably be in the range of $300/$500 on the make.
As mentioned earlier a dial indicator is/can be a very good cost effective alternative, if going this route I would suggest a minimum of 25 mm/ 1" of travel.
