Tailstock Bumper
A couple of years ago I got a bit enthusiastic when I slid the tailstock back after drilling a hole. The tailstock came to rest partially overhanging the end of the bed. Poor technique on my part, but as insurance against a disaster I added a "safety stop". There was already a 5/16" UNC hole in the bed casting which was nice. I don't know what Hercus intended for that hole, but initially I just screwed a 3" long 5/16 bolt in there. Later I made a bumper. The rubber ring is off a cheap doorstop from Bunnings. It's easy to remove by hand if I need the extra length between centres.

My bumper is even more agricultural - I put a small G clamp on the end of the bed. Keep meaning to put a bit of hose on the clamp where the tailstock makes contact with the G clamp but still haven't done that .

My Chinese lathe came with something like a 12mm odd shaft (from memory) with a threaded end into the bed to stop the tailstock coming off, it's never failed or bent.

I keep the fixed steady clamped on the end of the bed.

More because it’s convenient than to stop the tail stock taking off but it serves that purpose well too.
Cheers,
Greg.
