Chuck key
Hi,
I can’t find a local source for a 9mm lathe chuck key! Does anyone know where I might find one?
Cheers

Lathe turn a bit of stock to size & milling machine with Square block to make the square drive. Knock one up, they are quick and easy.
If you don't have the gear maybe someone local can help you out ?

Some round and a file if you don't have a mill.

While you are at it make an no-handle key that can go in a cordless drill - I find it's the quickest way to swap jaws.

It's almost certainly ⅜". Here's one in Melbourne:

No, it’s a 9mm key as per the manufacturer Pratt Bernurd made for the hercus 260.

Oh OK. Well i guess you could buy the ⅜ and mill/file/grind 0.25mm off each flat. Not ideal though.

This is the chuck key that I got with my 260. It was obviously what the school had been using. Initially I was horrified and was going to change it almost immediately. There was no milling here, just 10mm square bar attacked with a grinder. Not even a sanding disc on a grinder by the look of it!!!
Once I went through all of the dramas of actually getting it going, I just left it. It works.. I have spent my time and money on tooling, collets, ect that I didnt have instead.
I do recall seeing them on ebay at the time. They were listed from the seller who sells the Hercuc DVD's. Nemrod Sales or something like that... I assume https://australianmetalworkinghobbyi...te=common/home would be able to source one also.
I know that doesn't answer your question of a locally sourced supplier. Might take a phone call to Machinery House or similar...
Good luck with either making or finding one...

Thanks for the lead.
I’ve tried Hairy Forbes, 8mm ..10mm ..12mm .. 14 mm. Everything except 9 mm!
I’ll check the other options, but just about out of ideas locally

Hi Sailor, Guys,
That is the sort of thing that I would have just made ! A piece of 12 mm round bar and either filed or milled four flats to suit. Drill a cross hole for a piece of 6 or 8 mm bar, put in the lathe drill and thread for a grub screw in the end, and done ! Maybe half to three quarters of an hour.
Actually that is exactly how I made a second key for the four jaw chuck.Best Regards:
Baron J.

Thanks Baron and others,
I know I could just make one, but that was not why I made the posting.
Cheers

You might try here, although I couldn't find any on the website. Give 'em a call or e-mail, you might get lucky

If you can wait a week or so I’ll make you one, I need to make one for the Bernerd 4 jaw chuck I have. PM me if that’s of interest and we’ll work something out.
