Hi guys,
I just want to acknowledge Racingtadpole, who offered to make me a chuck key. Im only new to metalwork after many years at woodworking. His generosity is just terrific and much appreciated. So i just wanted to publicly thank him as i appreciate his kind gesture

Racingtadpole I'm just quoting industry standard. It's true that a soft chuck key in a home shop is likely to last longer than in a commercial application. The upside is that a soft key can be easily straitened if bent, whereas with a conventionally made key that is not so easy.
Regardless, I think you're a generous man to make a new key for Sailor! The world needs more people like you.

Mine
I modified mine too, it works quite well. Should have shortened the ball end though, I’ll do it one day.

I really don't want to come across as a smart alec, but I do struggle with misinformation.
If you do a bit of a survey online you will see that most suppliers mention that lathe chuck heys are 'hardened, or 'induction hardened'. Some of them also mention the material the key is made of (generally a bit vague like 'alloy steel') which points to 3/4 type. Just one example below, but there's dozens of them out there if you want to amuse yourself.
I have three lathe chuck keys here that I have run a file over, all three are quite resistant to a new sharp quality file. If you google the topic there's a wealth of information out there on what a lath chuck key should be made of, and how it should be hardened (through not case) etc.

I ran a file over my chuck keys today. Both are soft. Very soft in fact. Unknown provenance; but I think I can guess.

Hi Chris,
I've just checked the chuck key that came with the 125 mm HBM, that one is as hard as hell, the file just skates over the surface. All my other ones are soft enough to file easily including my drill chuck keys. Though I've only checked the drill chuck ones that I use regularly.Best Regards:
