who wants a D1-4 spindle for their 260
I am trying to find out if there is any appetite amoung 260 owners for the D1-4 spindle. This isn't the large bore variety, that Boris and Steve have on their GS-26 models, just the standard bore. It is possible that Hercus may be willing to make a batch, if the numbers are there. This should be a straight replacement for the standard threaded spindle. It would be nice, to be able to run the lathe in either direction without having to risk it unscrewing. The price, as you can see by the pricelist, will be a shocker.
For 9" owners, it will have to wait until we see how this goes.

It sure would.
I reckon it would be worth whatever it costs just for the safety improvement. But I'm worried about how much work is involved in the changeover. And I'd need to make new backing plates for my chucks. Might as well get new chucks if I'm going to the trouble. And my ER40 collet chuck would become a paperweight. I could sell that I guess.
Put me down as a "maybe" Mal.Chris

Jack, just after I bought my lathe I was slightly disappointed when I realised that parts and attachments were not going to be readily available and I'd need to be patient.
But soon after I found various leads to southbend parts and info that helped me slowly and incrementally gather information and tooling. That helped me realise what a great machine I now have. Sure I have the big bore which allows 5C collects to be used realitively cheaply without resorting to inaccurate Chinese 5C chucks.
In the case of the regular size bore 3C collects would be the norm.
Perhaps your ER would still be able to be used if properly modified with a draw bolt. A drawbolt would be relatively easy to make.
I now think I was fortunate to have been in the right place to find this lathe. At work I sometimes use a threaded spindle Hercus 260 which was my first intro to Hercus and metal lathes. I can tell you that I prefer the D 1-4.
So this opinion may not be shared by most for lots of considerations. Also take it for what it is, just an opinion of a self-taught relative novice.

Hi Boris,
My collet chuck screws onto the Hercus 260 spindle nose and allows stock of any length to be gripped. It's fantastic. A draw-bar is not an option with this chuck. I also have my original ER40 collet chuck with a MT4 shank which I use with a draw-bar. It can safely be used in reverse, but can only hold short stock.Chris

Hi Boris
The 5c collets were an option on the standard 260, I have a 5c draw tube that came with my long bed, the closer was missing from my head stock and I have not been able to track one down as yet but I will keep looking.
Mal
I would be keen on changing over my standard 260 to a D1-4 spindle on my long bed, definitely a nicer system than the screwed nose and less back gear breaking issues trying to undo stuck chucks.

And I guess I’d need a new faceplate and dog plate. I think the total cost of the changeover could be quite expensive.
