It appears to be missing the pulley drive system and motor mount. Desirable machine, but he's asking top dollar for it.
Always amazes me that people advertise with photos of their 'good working order', well loved machines, covered in crap with belts hanging off, bits scattered everywhere, and shoved in a dusty corner.

Looks like it hasn't worked for a long time. Plenty of cleaning to do on that one.

But why is the ARM a desirable machine? Just curious.

I am a self confessed Hercus fan, so by definition, it is desirable!! But then, not all Hercus's are created equal - this one has a taper bearing headstock, a quick change gearbox, relatively newish (1976), and it is metric. These days, I tend to work in metric, so a machine with metric dials and lead screw would be a bit easier to run than imperial....for me, anyway. Having said that, I have 3 imperial Hercus 9's, and one more modern, larger, lathe in metric.
Agree, this machine would need a good clean. Given how it was kept, you would have to wonder how well it was looked after and if it has had a hard life. It also doesn't look complete.
It is not desirable enough for me to find $2500.

    Newbe here, so hi all!

It turns out the lathe is more complete than is obvious from the photos. Just how good it is I'm about to find out: I bought it - happy with the deal I have done.

My current plan is for a bare metal resto... So quite possibly I'll have questions coming forward!

    Cheers

Good luck with your Resto. Keep us informed of progress.
Coincidentally, I picked up my Hercus from a tip in this forum. That was in Canberra too. Mine has a plain bearing spindle and is imperial, so I reckon you got the better deal in that regard, though mine is in top condition.
There are some great YouTube videos on the subject of restoration - you have to spend a bit of time sorting out the guys who think painting = restoring, from those who clean and service them thoroughly.
It's not really likely that you'll get the bed planed or reground, but a really good clean-up will go a long way towards getting the best you can from it.
    Enjoy!
