Default Hercus 9” serial number location

    Hi guys,
I’m looking to purchase a lathe, and the current owner has sent me some photos. It’s covered in bird poop.
It’s definately a type A as it has a gearbox. I’m not sure where the serial numbers are located on the bed ( assuming they are on the bed ) do they normally have a matching taistock?

The current owner doesn’t know where to look, but I’m sure someone will know. All he knows is he bought it from the old Swinburne tech. It’s a fair drive for me so any info prior to looking all the better

    Thankyou for any help.

There should be a serial number on the data plate on the front of the gearbox, one on the bed (tailstock end, on the rear way, between the flat and the V way), one on the tailstock (there should flat machined on the casting of the base, under the hand wheel), and one on the H frame holding the counter/jack shaft pulley. Hard to describe in words...I seem to recall someone publishing some photos on this forum to help. You could also look up the Australian Metalworking Hobbyist web site, there is info on identifying your lathe there.
    Good luck, Tony

    Thanks tony,

I’ve found plenty of info on what the serial numbers mean, but until now, not where to look.

    Cheers steve
