Default Hercus 260 Fine Feed Gear

In the Hercus 260 Attachments Brochure circa 1980 there is Part Number: 5HY 94 Fine Feed Gear A - AM. Reduces feed rate to 1/4 normal.

Does someone have details about the gear, and how to fit it at an AM?

    Thanks in advance,
    Alan.

It looks to be a 72/18 compound, not sure about the correct mounting arrangement on your banjo, you might have to experiment with position.

Thanks Pipeclay. I too suspected 72/18. I will have a play this afternoon and see if I can work out where it will fit in.

72/18 gear and how to set it up.
    See the photographs....
The 60 tooth gear, and the 80 tooth gear are re-used. The 45 tooth gear was used as a"spacer" in the original set-up (in front of the 60 tooth gear). In the second set-up with the 72-18 gear I tried the 60 and the 45 in reversed, BUT the 45 fouls the new set-up, so a 32 tooth gear has been used on the leadscrew input - as a spacer behind the 60 tooth gear - as it just clears the other gears. Any gear of a diameter equal to, or less than 32 teeth would be suitable - or a spacer. You will need the mounting hardware for the 72/18 gear to make it all work! The mounting hardware is the same as that used on the 80 tooth gear in the original setup. Not hard to make. Bolt, a washer, and nut, plus the sleeve to mount the gear on. When you loosen the banjo, remember it can move left and right to get the gears in full mesh. Wth the 72/18 fitted all the time then the Norton gearbox feeds (listed on the front of the gearbox) can be divided by four, so the 72/18 could probably remain in place most of the time.Hercus 260A 72-18 after.jpgHercus 260A 72-18 Gear before.jpg

Where did you source the gear?
I could have done with a reduced feed last week, and it doesn't look terribly difficult to fit out.

The gear came from Australian Metalworking Hobbyist.

Another alternative to reducing feed rate would be to change your stud gear from 20 teeth to 16 teeth and to reduce slightly more for sliding feeds use the 16 and feed by engaging the half nuts.

    Default Fits

Based on AJ's post and a punt that the differences between the 260 and the 9's gear train are mostly cosmetic, I purchased a 72 -18T gear from Mick Moyle in Sydney for $60 plus postage. Fits the 9 perfectly and should I choose to run the lathe at full whack, 2650 rpm, I should have some managable slow feeds. Just have to remember that the forward and reverse are back to front!!

    EDIT:

Does any one know where such a compound gear can be purchased?
