Default Hercus Milling Machine Collet Assembly

    Hi,
Can any one tell me how the collet holder is removed from the vertical head? I thought it just knocked out by inserting a drift from the top and giving it a tap. Is that correct.
    Cheers.

If the accessory has a Morse taper with no thread on the end, tapping with a plain drift should be OK.
But if it has a female thread on the end for tightening with a threaded bar, the normal way would be to unscrew the bar a bit, and then tap the top of it with a hammer.
To use a drift where there's a thread on the accessory risks damaging the thread.

    Default Hurcus Collet

    Hi Nadroj,
It is not the morse taper or the collet I am trying to remove, but the collet holder that the collets tighten up in, so the morse taper can then fit in.
    Cheers.

I think that generally if there is no thread or other feature that could be damaged by drifting, then it's probably OK to do that.
What type of collets do you use?

Is it the Vertical spindle that you want to remove, if so you will need to disassemble the Vertical head.

    Hi Guys,

Does the collet fit into the Morse taper socket that is part of and machined into the spindle ?
    Best Regards:

My hercus mill has a piece that fits the morse taper and the collets fit into this and is tightened by a drawbar. That slides down the inner part of the vertical head spindle. To get it apart first unscrew drawbar and remove it and the collet. To get the collet/ MT3 adapter out I slide a piece of 5/8 bar down the spindle and tap with a hammer. I hav found if you tighten the collet excessively then this adapter is really difficult to loosen. It will only come out with the aid of a bigger hammer! Hope this answers your question

    Hi hpa1,
Thanks for the reply. I was pretty sure that was what I did but it was quite awhile ago and I didn't want to damage anything.
    Cheers.

Nothing wrong with brass, but the plain bar supplied with my small Emco mill-drill as new is steel.
