    Cool Layshaft Bearing refurbishment

    G'day all,

While going over my recently acquired C model lathe I found the source of a noise while the machine was running.
Thankfully the shaft hadn't worn all the way through and the was sufficient material left to allow me to bore the casting out back to round and machine a Bronze bushing to press back in.

Just a small project, but I'm very much a keen beginner and it was my first attempt at turning parts to fit in this manner.
    Pretty happy with the result!

Looks like an excellent fit to me, good job! did you redrill the two oil holes? Might be worth countersinking them a little deeper so they retain a little more oil, stave off the next rebush?

    Hi Scottyd,

    Thanks for that!
Yes, I did redrill the holes through the bushing. Took them out a little larger with that in mind. I wonder if I can find some small oilers that might be made to fit? I also turned a couple of very small internal grooves, centered on each hole to give the oil a pathway around the shaft.

With the bearing and a new length of 3/4 shaft fitted, the lathe is running much quieter and smoother. The bearings are not heating up at all. Last part of the job will be to mill/grind a flat on the new shaft.

What did I learn from this project?
Machining Cast Iron is wonderful as is working with Bronze!
Taking a series of small cuts to sneak up on the desired fit and not rushing the process is definitely the way to go.
Cheap ebay parting tool holders are rubbish!

    Nice one.

This has been on my to-do list for some time. Mine aren't as bad as yours were though but they certainly aren't round anymore I have the 3/4" bar to redo the whole set up. Maybe soon. The issue of course was that I only had one lathe, so I couldn't do them without taking the lathe out of action. But now I have two lathes there is no excuse.
