    Default Prototype Hercus Lathe

I spotted this at an auction a couple of days ago it sold for around $500. It was in good condition too. Quite an unusual Hercus I would have thought.

That is unusual. Some familiar things, and some things I would never have associated with a Hercus. Be interesting to hear what the Hercus gurus say about it.

I regret that I do not see a photograph of the serial number on the bed.
The Hercus badge is either painted on or is an adhesive label / transfer. You could call a re-badging process (if that is what happened) "value added" merchandise.
It could I suppose be a "Noname" Japanese knock-off of an Australian clone of a Southbend lathe.
The Hercus group could get into quite a lather over this lathe.

It would make a fine Christmas present for the Hercus owner and connoisseur who has nearly everything.

Something similar happens with the badges on refrigerators : "Hoover", "Frigidaire", "Westinghouse", "General Electric" etc where the same factory turns them all out with a choice of badges.

It seems this is the real thing and in better condition than a museum item.

    Interesting observation.
The C clamp on the tray is exactly the same as the one I made at the SA Institute of Tech in 1964

The headstock is different to the one I found in the museum (which matched the photo I found in the Hercus book). One looks like a bushing version, while the other looks to have bearings. All very interesting from an historical point of view.
There is one for sale right now in Victoria. He's looking for $1500. Maybe ok for a keen collector but too much, compared to a Hercus 9" which can still be a reliable workhorse. Still, a rare machine, good luck to him.
