The threads only hold the chuck in place.

The register is the horizontal flat portion along with the flat face, immediately behind the threads. That is where the accuracy of the fitting is determined. Any damage to the surface of that portion will be detrimental. Absolute cleanliness of the register and the threads is vital.

Realistically the female part that fits onto the register should have a ground finish and virtually zero gap between the surfaces.

Get a bit of almost anything trapped there may mean that the chuck is hard or almost impossible to remove once its on.
Jeez I wish this myth would die already.

The cylindrical unthreaded portion of the spindle nose - the "register" does no such thing. The two faces that control the alignment of the backing plate are the tapered faces of the thread and the face on the shoulder of the spindle nose. The original hercus backplates certainly do not have a ground finish, theyre just as machined. They also have quite a bit of clearance between that unthreaded portion of the back plate and the "register" on the spindle nose.

Hercus tended to have reasonably tight fitting threads, which does make them a little bit intolerant of having schmutz trapped between them. Debris will affect how aligned the chuck will be, clenliness is essential if you want a repeatable fit. But Ive cut a stack of backing plates and a few collet chucks over the last few years and youd be surprised just how loose a fit you can have, but still end up with a repeatable way to mount a chuck on the spindle nose.

Agreed. If cutting an internal thread is all that is needed, I'll put my hand up to help too (although someone will need to give me some dimensions).

It's nice to be self sufficient, but there is no shame in occasionally asking for help as we have all at some stage had something to do that we were not set up for or not confident with.

Scotty, Baron, Jackaroo, everyone...again, thanks for your input here. You are all helping me better understand the whole process.

Scotty, Whilst eventually I do indeed intend to buy all the gears needed for Imperial thread cutting, the collet chuck will come first - in this case it seems I'm onto one via pipeclay.

Just like my journey into ACDC Tig welding that I started a few years ago, it now seems I am hopelessly addicted to this turning thing and indeed the whole metalworking/machining hobby, mostly as applied to my motorcycle racing. I can see a slippery slope ahead, littered with many machine and accessory purchases...

    Thanks again.

I know how that goes, there's only just enough room left in the shed for the Speed Triple. Hell, I originally bought machines with the justification of making parts for my trackday car...'cept the car is gone now and all the machines have stayed
