Maybe even an unthreaded, but spigotted and Loctited, join would work?
No harm to try, now that we know how to remove the bits if it comes apart.

Hi Moz,
Just thinking, so bear with me
If the pin was headless would there be enough room to get a pin in and out of there ? And how much would it be able to protrude from the face of the gear ?
I'm assuming that the end of the pin would be rounded, so that would gain an extra mm or so in order to get a pin in and out between the gear and frame.Best Regards:

Baron - good thinking, but unfortunately, nup.
In fact I even made up a headless pin to give it a try, but there's nowhere near enough clearance. The genuine bull gear pin arrived in the post today and I have Friday off. I reckon Friday might be Operation Spindle Out day!
Cheers,
Moz

Hi Moz,
Aw well, it was just a thought anyway.
Good Luck replacing that pin, I hope that it goes smoothly for you.Best Regards:

Okay.
So today I went out to the shed, took a deep breath and stripped the peripherals off the spindle of my 260ATM, exposing the bearings, intending to pull the spindle in order to fit the new bull gear pin that Mal had promptly sent me. Everything I uncovered was in perfect condition.
And I stood there and considered making up a puller (no biggie really) or banging something with a hammer (not in my nature) and I had second thoughts. I mean, it's all perfect...why disturb it just because some school kid with the mechanical sympathy of a baboon decided to use the back gear as a brake and snapped the pin?
So I quietly cleaned everything, carefully put it back together and then, with access only to the back gears because of the lack of bull gear pin (my excuse for the dodgey looking part), knocked up a stubby replacement bull gear pin to test.
It's as rough as a badger's bum - and pardon the rubbish photo - but the bottom line is that it fits, locks in place with the bull gear pin spring just like the original. When the bull gear needs to be unlocked, with the spring pulled out of the way using an engineer's pick, the bodgey pin can be extracted with a magnet on a stick.
So the plan now is to revert to creating the oft-discussed Mosquito Garage Two Piece Experimental Bull Gear Pin. I'm happy that the experiment has been a success, I just need to now make a final part, fully functional part (not requiring a magnet to extract) that I can look at without feeling too embarrassed.
More updates to come. Thanks so much for your advice and support, guys.
P.S - endlessly amused that I've had to edit this post a couple times because the forum automatically edits out my primary-school level naughty swears!
