AXA100 type quick change tool post feedback?
Me again, sorry.
So, I have a Hercus 260 as some of you will know. New to turning, love it, I'm out there every evening after work having a go and getting the hang of it.
'Turning is learning' but bloody hell I seem to spend a lot of time farting around changing tools with my standard setup...out with one, in with the other, check, shim, next operation, do it again...ugh.
I see that AMWH has adaptor studs available for the AXA 100 type quick change tool posts. And I see that these tool posts are available all over the place for not much cash, from the standard Chinesium online stuff to H&F (that is likely the same).
Are you using one of these? What do you think?
Also, I see that the AXA 100 tool holders have capacity for only a 14mm max tool. One of my favourite tools is a WNMG that is 16x16mm and I don't see any that are smaller than this. Would I be better off with the bigger capacity AXA 200?
Pardon my ignorance...

The 200 would be too big for your lathe, with the tool knock a couple mill off the top, if you haven't got a mill you could just bring it off until it fits the holder.

Thanks for the feedback pc. Do you have the AXA 100 yourself?
'Bring it off?' As in sand, linish or similar?
Don't have a mill, but if my evil plans come together I will hopefully be able to score a Hercus '0' Mill, gratis, from the same source from whence the freebie Hercus 260 came.
Appreciate all feedback and comments, as always. Thanks guys.

Maybe should of said take off, the top is not critical unless you think at some stage you may want to invert your tool , h base is the important part.
Even reducing the thickness from 16mm to 14mm ora bit less will have no detrimental effect to the machining ability of the tool as the Hercus doesn't have the HP to run the tool at its maximum.
No I don't have the AXA I use a standard 4 way holder on my Hercus and a BXA on a larger lathe.

This is a subject that I am addressing at the moment. At the local mens shed, we have a small Nutall lathe similar in size to your Hercus, and finding shims to pack the various tools to CH drives me nuts. M&G Productions also have an eBay presence, but shopping direct is likely to be cheaper. AXA Series Wedge Quick Change Tool Post Set ,Up to12"_Machine Tool Access._M&G Productions I am planning on visiting them on my next trip to the North Island of Tasmania, as I have a few other items in mind as well. I have seen several references to them on this forum, (all favourable), but have had no dealings with them as yet, other than a phone call enquirey, and a subsequent email with info on an AXA tool post /holder kit. Their prices on their website do not include GST, but are pretty good just the same, (their eBay listings are GST inclusive) Here is the spec sheet that M&G sent to me on the AXA kit

This is the important bit (from an Aloris catalogue). The dimension you need to check is 'A' on the diagram, and that will dictate what size QCTP will be best for you.

Moz, Peter means to remove 2mm from the upper surface of the slot that holds the tool holder. It's a quick job on the mill (or a slow but do-able job with a hacksaw and file ) provided you don't want it done in a hurry I or possibly one of the other Adelaide members with a mill could probably do it for you. Check first though - you may find that on it's lowest position the shank of the tool is thick enough that even if the holder were milled out, the tool would be above centre. In that case, it may be better to mill some off the bottom of the tool.
I say this because when I got my first QCTP I discovered that the previous owner of the lathe had modified the 4 way post by thinning down the bottom of the slot for the tool (which was why it would never sit flat). The QCTP would only take a 12mm tool whereas the 4 way would take a 16...

My sincere thanks for your input. Yes, constantly messing around backing off fasteners, shimming and changing tool holders drives me nuts! Seems that it's just a chore that gets in the way of me actually getting the chuck spinning and learning something!
Thank you for your offers but I think I can probably get a couple mm milled off my 16mm WNMG tool holder without too much fuss. I don't have too much invested in tool holders as yet, but the WNMG insert is already a firm favourite, and seeing as I can only find 16mm holders for it, I feel some adaptation is warranted in order to continue to enjoy the results this insert delivers. I can easily switch to 12mm holders for my other insert types.
Can't wait to get a QCTP and start moving faster...

A QCTP is the single best mod to a lathe in my opinion. Closely followed by a VFD. I have an Aloris AXA on my 260. Most people with the Chinese knockoff seem to be happy. I’m pretty sure I have a number of tool holders with 16mm slots. I think they have an “XL” suffix in the part number (I’m not home at the moment). Will confirm when I get home.
If you get one I highly recommend the parting blade holder with a built in 7 degree tool slot.Chris

Thanks Chris, I had the same thought as I was driving in the car this morning. I wasn't sure if other manufacturers other than Aloris or Dorian made the XL version, but it rang a bell in my head, that there was a 5/8" version of the turning and facing tool holder. Did you buy yours new, or if not do you know where they are available by any chance?

I bought mine from these guys. I bought a heap of them plus other stuff to make the postage worthwhile.

I bought the 250-100 piston type quick change tool post off ebay for my hercus c model and it works a treat!

That is GREAT information Chris, thanks so much. Knowing that I can potentially run 16mm, 14mm and 12mm tool holders in an AXA 100 post is a huge help. And also good to hear that you feel this is a worthwhile mod - my gut has always told me that productivity must surely increase massively with this in place? I mean, I don't do production work, but where's the joy in changing and shimming tools? It's the turning where the fun is.
Thanks again,
