    Default Replace Bull Pin ? : Hercus 9" Model A :

Have noticed something strange on my headstock spindle - ie I move the chuck slightly before the whole spindle spins - you can feel it, a tiny change in resistance.

I think its a loose / damaged bull pin.

    A) Its always been loose and I simply didnt notice it - This seems unlikely, my memory is that the bull pin was always a tight snug fit and that slight "backlashy" feeling was never evident before when I turned the spindle by hand.

    B) Pull the bull pin out and have a look

I've got the 9" Guide to Renovating but cant find any notes re the bullpin.

Google and forum searches not terribly helpful, Mal has bull pins and retaining clips for sale.

Do I just somehow get behind the bull wheel and remove the clip and then the bull pin or do I have to do a full spindle removal ?

........... then while I am at it I might as well do this that and the other ......... and for me that's a big job. Character building.

Off to the shed to have another look and a fiddle about.

Pulling the spindle on a 9in isnt a big job. A mallet and a small flat head screwdriver, youll have it in your hands within two minutes.

That said, you could remove the guard over that half of the backgears, then reach into the gap and pull out the retaining clip and youll have it out. Given that youd have to cuss at it with a little hook in a relatively tight space, which would take time and cussing that the misso doesnt like...Id just pull the spindle.

That seems like a lot of work for taking out a bit of backlash on a pin, maybe try the other hole 180 degrees on the pulley, it won't make any difference to how it runs but it might be a good idea to check the bearing preload if it's an AR model

    Bill,

A long shot given that you reckon the pin's the problem. I had a bit of slop in my ARL's drive. It was a not tight enough grub screw in the countershaft's pulley. Could be worth a look. The pin in my lathe is loose-ish in both bull gear holes.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help. I reckon I have been imagining things and this little bit of play isnt a problem.

If anybody stumbles across this thread then - yes you can reach in behind the bull wheel and pull the clip off the bull pin - however on my lathe I couldnt extract the bull pin past the front of the headstock - other bits got in the way - and haven't got ther guts/skills/confidence to pull the whole spindle without reading a bit more about it first.

So thanks again for all suggestions - its going to stay a tadge sloppy until I read/learn a bit more about the headstock. It feels sloppy when the belt is loose but when the blet is under tension it is masked a lot so maybe it was always like this but I never noticed, contrary to my initial belief.

    Bill,

While you are mucking around with the spindle and headstock it would probably be an opportune time to remove the small slotted set screw from the cone pulley and squirt a bit of oil in there. There is also a screw in the back gear that serves as another filler cap. Worth checking that too if you haven't done so.

I replaced said screw with a ¼ x ¼ socket head grub screw. Makes removal and replacement much easier.
