Default A question on lathe levelling

    Hi all,

Looking for some advice regarding initial setup of my Hercus 9. It's installed on a metal cabinet which sits on my concrete garage floor. As a starting point, I've used a spirit level on the ways to set the lathe level. The lathe mounting bolts at the headstock end have been tightened and the ones at the tailstock end are just 'finger tight' as per the Hercus manual.

Following the manual, I turned up a test bar with two collars with mid points approximately 3.5 inches apart. My micrometer readings indicate that the outer collar (closer to the tailstock) is 0.001 inch smaller than the inner collar.

I'm confused about this statement in the Hercus manual:

"The lathe will be correctly positioned when the diameter of the outer collar is smaller than that of the inner collar by an amount equal to the error measured in the horizontal plane on the headstock test bar. This error is shown in the inspection record sheet which accompanies the machine".

Wouldn't the goal be for the two collars to be exactly the same diameter? Not surprisingly given that my lathe was manufactured in 1948, I don't have an inspection record sheet.

    Advice would be appreciated!

    Joe

When I first got my model A i did a test over about 400mm of aluminium using a very slow power-feed and it was out about 15thou from memory. I managed to bring that back to between 1-2thou with some trial and error but I'm not likely to ever need anything better than that, still a rank novice at best!
