Diamond Tool Holder
Hi there
I own a Hercus 260 ATM and am currently looking at tool holders so just wondering if anyone is using the Diamond tool holder on their lathe.
I don't seem to be having much success with index-able tips and like the look of this tool and given that it comes with a sharpening guide thought it might be the right bit of gear for me?

I have both left and right versions and I really like them. They are my tool holder of choice.
I also have one of the Eccentric engineering parting blades - my parting success took a dramatic improvement with the use of this tool.

Same as bob, I have the left, right and parting and swear by them. I ended up getting a bigger one for the lathe at work and now use nothing else.
Carbide are just a little expensive and not (to me) versatile enough without spending up big.
When I say "versatile enough", I am talking about grinding a 'special' tool and using a normal toolholder.
Well worth the investment.

Thanks guys, I am fairly new at turning and was concerned about grinding tool bits to the correct angles, so thought this would assist me in making less mistakes. If I may ask, what height tool holder did you purchase for your Hercus, was it the 12 mm?

I also have the 12mm on my 260. It's my 'Go to' tool for most turning and facing jobs. Excellent on steel, ali and plastic. Not so good on brass. If you get one of their Crobalt bits it will make turning stainless a lot easier.

Bob & Phil,
The left-handed tool holder is promoted as a thread cutting tool as well. Do you use it for that, or just for turning up to a shoulder from the left?
Edit: Phil, I just checked the thread you linked to and I already asked you that question. My memory is going! Do you still use the LH DTH for threading?

I haven't done any thread turning with it.

A fair bit of work grinding the HSS to the right angle for threading. When done tho you will have a long lasting thread cutter.
I tried cutting some small diameter brass with my diamond holder a while back which caught and totally stuffed up. The tip of the HSS was damaged, but only needs a regrind. Not a big deal. I also cut a new piece of HSS for another job and discovered that the length is important, at least with a 4 way tool post. It was too long to rotate the tool post. It hit the compound. Note to self.......
I bought my holder back when the biggest size available was 12mm I think. I only have a right hand tool. I would like to get a L and R to fit the lathe (20 -25mm), but they are very expensive for what they are. I have one end of the HSS without a radius for cutting a sharp shoulder. My Lathe Tool Height Gauge make height setting a breeze.
Dean
It is a 16mm tool I have.

Hi Jack
funny you should ask, I am doing a small project at the moment that I will post shortly and had to cut a 1/2" Whit just yesterday with the tool holder.
I don't have a die that size .
I have a piece of HSS ground to 60 deg and one at 55 deg ready to go and just change them over depending on whether I am doing Whitworth or Metric/UNC.
Gotta be the most convenient tool I have.

I'm sure you wont be disappointed Jack.
In this there is a bit of footage of the DTH in action.

I'll see if I can find some of it cutting a thread
