    Default New 9inc lathe owner

    G'day all,
I have recently become the new owner of an ARM 9inch hercus lathe serial number is 14499.(I'm happy for this information to go on the registers) , location is Darwin N.T)

It is running with the only modifications/changes is a conversion to a single phase motor. Incidentally when this was done the motor pulley is only single speed so the lathe only has 4 speeds at the moment.(will need to make a new drive pulley)Just read a previous post on how to operate back gears I now have 8 speeds lol

I was given some work for the lathe by my boss and he offered (rather than cash) to purchase me tooling up to a value of approx. $500.00.

I was thinking of getting him to purchase me an AXA100 QCTP and a set of carbide tool insert holders, maybe even a set of parallels.

I already have 4jaw chuck, traveling and fixed steady, DIG, micrometers and other small pieces of tooling.

What would you buy and where is a good place in Aus to get tooling?

    WHAT!
Someone offered to sponsor your lathe!!?
How do I get that kind of deal?
Seriously, well done. Have you seen allterrain50's deal for bed regrinds? ~$300 is a great price.
    cheers,
    Andrew

A carriage stop is handy. Not necessarily a micrometer type.
A slotted cross slide, mainly for the flat top that you can place indicator stands etc onto, but also for basic milling.
A faceplate can hold some jobs and also serve as a drive plate for turning between centres.
A driving dog and 2 centres for between centres turning.
Centres - bearing type is good, carbide point also OK, and get a soft one so you can true it up each time it's inserted into the main spindle.
A centre adaptor (main spindle to 2MT).
    Dial indicator and magnetic stand.
A wood board to protect bed from falling chucks etc (make this yourself).

A dead centre this one, in case you don't know. You can make one yourself very easily by using the chuck to hold it. Just true it up each time.

For buying tooling try Lathe Tool Holders & Inserts | Dale Tools. I have had good success and he has looked after me.

its a bit dirty and rusty I've been cleaning it up as I've been working. I have about 80 used pipe flanges to bore out and clean up the faces on to practice. That is the work from my boss that is going to give me the $500.

Nice deal with the boss buying you some tooling! In regards to the QCTP, I recently just purchased a BOSTAR AXA wedge type toolpost kit, came with a bunch of various holders and a knurling tool. Chinese knock-off but made of steel and actually a nice tool, it's been a god send, wish I had one from the start. Only thing though, it came with a very large oversize T-nut, so I had to mill it down to suit the Hercus compound. If you don't have a milling attachment I would highly recommend dipping into that $500 the boss is offering on tools and grab one off ebay or wherever you can get it. I use mine far more often than I ever imagined.

Some very good ideas. Thanks for all your responses. I have decided to get a QA-100 QCTP, a set of 7 insert tool holders, a lathe carrier dog 38mm(thanks for the idea nadroj) and a protractor that I can use for measuring angles on HSS tools.
