Default Hercus No3 T&CG base dimensions

I recently acquired a Hercus No3 Tool & Cutter Grinder (older model with plain slides. table with 1/2" t slot without v-way.), mechanically in good shape.

It was removed from a solid timber bench (the iron pedestal base has gone AWOL some years back), and so I'm looking to (preferably) replicate the missing base.

    A couple of options present.....

    1) concrete and rebar
    2) laminated stacked timber or MDF around a 6" steel pipe core with plate steel flange top and bottom (allowing ballast inside the pipe), painted as faux iron.
    3) locate a spare pedestal (seems unlikely)
    4) build a cabinet type base (including some storage), mobility would be a plus...

Knowing how heavy the top section is, I know the base is going to need to be pretty heavy with appropriate footprint to prevent tip over.

So I'm really looking for original dimensions and suggestions from the alternatives above (or any other great ideas)

    Hercus No 3 Tand C 001 (Large).jpg

    Working from the bottom up.....

    Base plate width = 22"
    Overall height =
    Base plate mounting holes = 4 x 1/2" @ 16" ctrs
    Base plate thickness =
Width of square pedestal at base plate =
Radius pedestal to base plate =
Width of square pedestal at top =
Radius to edges of square pedestal =
Diameter of upper cylindrical section =
Height of upper cylindrical section =
    Total height of base =

Mounting flange on grinder column = 7"ODx3"ID with 4x1/2" holes on 6" PCD

Hope you can help fill in the blanks.

    Thanks and regards
    John

I will pick up my newly aquired No.3 about the 10th. September, so I will be able to measure it after that. I am overseas on Friday for a while.
By chance do you have the accessories? I have none and will need to fabricate them.

    Regards,
    Alan.

    Hi AJ

Thanks for your reply and offer of measurements - greatly appreciated. I do not have any accessories either and will also be looking to fabricate - probably a pair of tailstocks, and a universal work head. Happy to collaborate.

    Regards
    John

Good luck with your machines. I have a very early number 1, despite the numbering the later model... There is a discussion of the workhead that I think fits your machines and pictures of one disassembled here (from post 35)

I am happy to measure this up if it is useful.

Thanks for the link - some very useful material and photos there, and I greatly appreciate the offer of dimensions for the work head.
I'll make some sketches and if you could fill in the dims that would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi John

If you like I could print a photo in half-tone, put some dimensions on that, photograph it and post that?

    Hi John

Some dimensions for the work head, if these aren't clear PM me your address and I will post them.

I have tried to give you what I think would be useful to make it rather than trying to do a full measured drawing. Let me know if you would like more information.

The centre height is 3.567" and the centre is 0.125 behind the back edge of the main slide.

FWIW In measuring this I thought about how I would make it and I think that I would buy a collet spindle as a starting point.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Cnc-Mill-...item5b170ad77d

It needs to be a very low friction assembly, I think that it needs simple roller bearings without seals.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing how you go.

    Regards

    Ian

Ian - Thank you so much for posting those drawings and dimensions.

Funnily enough, I have that exact ER25x150 collet chuck (from CTC Tools) and was figuring on using it for this purpose !!!

I really appreciate how much time it takes to put those drawings together.

I'll post progress to this thread. Thank you.

    Regards

    John

When I looked again at this I realized that I had posted two copies of one of the drawings and missed one.

    Here it is.
