    Default Lathe Question

I finally found a lathe . They constantly turn up, but are all over the country, aren't they !
I wanted to see it first . so it had to be in Melbourne . This is a little rough with some parts missing , so Ive been ordering some through Mal at AMH .
I have wanted one for a while , as a workshop user for some woodwork machinery restoration, and a thousand other things .
A few years ago I did not have a clue what all the levers and gears did on a lathe . It's not until you get your hands on one that the learning really takes off . what a great Machine .

There is some visible wear in the bed, the tail stock is one number out , so not it's original . They must have been in the same school room together I suppose ?

    Here is some pictures

I have the books to read more on the subject but plenty of Learner type questions as well, and I'm just starting on the books .

Can any one tell me why there are two gears on the end of the lead screw , that's the screw gear right?
The one being used is 46 teeth and the other , on the outside is 44 teeth.
which is the right one for the feed speeds on the chart plate that's on the gear box? and whats the other for ?

The plate on the gearbox has feed speeds for a stud gear of 20 or 40 , the lathe is running the 20 now , is that 44 I have for the stud gear position and why is it a 44 and not a 40 ??

The textbook of turning I have , there is a chart for inch to metric for the model A but it's for a 260 is this good for my AR 9" ?

I better hold back on questions for now , I have to many .

    Thanks. Rob

The gear at the top near the reverse tumblers is the stud gear, either 20 or 40 tooth, the gear on the lead stew is the screw gear, this gear should be. 56 tooth gear running on the 80 tooth idler.

It would appear that the 44 tooth gear is there to take up the space, the 44 is not needed in standard form but you will require a 56 tooth gear, other wise you will not be able to cut the threads on the threading chart or feeds on the feed chart.

    Thanks Pipeclay,
So I need the 40 tooth for the stud gear and a 56 .
Is that the only two I need to get the lathe to standard form?

what do I need if I want to cut metric threads on this lathe ?

And apart from those gears to get it to standard , is there any reason to have any other gears ?

And where do I get them ?

Once you have the 56 driven by the 80 and either the 20 or 40 you can cut or feed with the combinations displayed on the gear box chart.

When it comes to metric threads on an Imperial machine you need to use a transposing gear of in original size 100/127 teeth.

There are other variations of transposing gear that may get you exact or very very close rather than using the 100/127, I just cant recall them at this time.

As well as the 100/127 or alternative you will require other gears to allow you to cut different MM pitches, there are thread charts available listing the MM pitches available and the associated gears as wheel as the gear train and quick change gear box configurations to cut them.

Gears can be sourced from Ebay,USA(southbend lathes are almost identical, hercus is a copy),AMWH,myself or if you have a mill and associated tooling you could cut them yourself.

Thanks again for the info .
I found what was needed at AMH . Lucky I asked the question . I would have discovered it the hard way if I hadn't . It didn't occur to me that what was there could have been totally wrong.

Cut the gears myself, yeah, ha ha. This lathe is my first metal lathe , every thing metal before this has been done free hand with an angle grinder, a drill press, a Mig welder and a forge . It would be nice to have the tools for that , and the knowledge as well, not even on the horizon yet though

The coat hook repurposed to replace the broken halfnut lever is very steampunk !!
