    Default shaft

    The countershaft ?

On my Sheraton, similar to a Hercus. There are allen head grub screws holding the V belt cone pulley assembly onto the shaft , look for holes in the pulley where you can insert a allen key and loosen the screws . You may have to remove the large pulley on the end with a puller , look for the locking screws on the hub of the pulley . After the pullies are loose you can hit the shaft out , be careful not to mushroom the end of the shaft , use a soft drift

Thanks for that, I have the V pulleys out it is the eccentric one behind that I am having trouble with as I have the 2 bolts removed from underneath but it does not move.
Do you know if there is a manual available.

    Mike,

You must have a "P" pattern drive on your lathe? On the upright "H" pattern, the backgear isn't in the way.

There is a taper pin on the eccentric shaft bush at the right hand end of the backgear assembly. The small end of the pin should be rearmost when the backgear is disengaged.. Mark the position of the eccentric shaft bush because taper pins are often intentionally located off centre, then drive the pin out. Remove the bush and the backgear from the eccentric shaft. Easy.

Does anyone have any experience with using the link / joint type V belts? Would avoid having to get right in amongst it for a simple belt change!

I've been running one of these on my Craftsman since 2008, no stretch or fraying, excellent.

I tried a link belt on my ARL and the belt rubbed against the rear quill gear guard. The Gates belt I use is 0.515" wide and the link belt, 0.590". Some link belts may be narrower. I bought mine from Transeals and only use it now to determine belt lengths for when I might need a belt of an unknown size. The same belt was once fitted in my little mill but stretch was an issue. That much of an issue that the spindle and countershaft had to come out to fit a new non link belt.

    Default Link Belt

You prompted me to measure a link belt (red colour) I have had in use for about 25 yrs on an abrasive belt slitting machine.
It got a lot of use 8hrs per day & proved to be excellent, outlasting conventional vee belts.
    It measures .517" wide.
My guess it will outlast me
So the .517" link belt seems to be the winner !

    Yes, good belts.
    There are 2 of them
A 1 1/2" dia vee pulley (machined from mild steel) off the 1400 rpm motor to a 4"dia on an air clutch.
    Then a 3" dia to a 12" dia vee
The 1 1/2" vee pulley would wear out & has been replaced a few times, (always kept a spare as this machine had to be kept running, in my busy business at the time)
Conventional vee belts were always being replaced, until an old bloke at Blackwoods, put me onto the red Link Belts.
They are "PowerTwist" made by Fenner Manheim 311 West Stiegel St Manheim PA 1545 USA 800-243-3374
