Went and bought a 72/18 compound gear from Moyles Engineering today so I could get the auto feed working. Plan was to get the gears for the slowest feed rate so I could auto finish parts.
Well that only left the 16 stud gear to get... or so I thought
Getting back to the shed it turns out the compound gear I got with the lathe isn't a 54/18 but is in fact a 54/20... Poop!!!!
Not sure this is even a proper compound gear for this lathe, unless someone can tell me otherwise. Looks like I'm still on the hunt for a 16 and a 54/18.

Where are you pipeclay? Think I've got a couple of leads on gears at the moment, but will drop you a line if I am not able to source anything.

Lathe Help
Malcolm from Australian Metalworking Hobbiest was kind enough to pop in to see my Hercus today to check exactly what I had and see where it needed attention. I am happy to say the overall report was very good with only a few minor bits needing immediate attention and a few others to be addressed once its up and running.
Immediate attention stuff is:
1. Shorten the motor adjuster arm. I had just bought the lever off Malcolm and now it appears the adjuster arm is too long for use with the lever
2. Replace the tailstock locking arm as its a bit chewed up and the taper doesn't fit in the mounting hole properly
3. Replace the gear cover mounting arm. Its not original and so the cover doesn't line up properly
4. Fit a new locking bolt for the compound as one of them is missing
Stuff to work on later is:
1. Crossfeed and compound has a fair bit of slop in it. Seems like they have been messed about with a bit and so there is a bit of play in the handles. It will get stripped down, proper spacers fitted and bits repaired/replaced as required.
2. Get a replacement handle for the tailstock locking bolt
That should get me all working and up and running. For those with Hercus models with a motor on a separate mount, can you measure the rods either side of the adjuster so I can trim one of mine down to the correct length? Also anyone know what thread is on the rods?

Lathe Help
Thought I would just cut the adjuster based on my setup rather than worrying about what it should be. Worst case I buy another arm.
I cut the end and bent it over in the vice. Didn't get a super tight radius so had to get the grinder out and take some material off to get it through the mounting hole properly. Also took the time to drill out the split pin holes so they were large enough for the SS split pins I had in my toolbox:
This rigging of the tensioner arm meant I could yet fit it and measure up for a belt. In the end the minimum was 46" so I bought a 6PK1170 serpentine belt off eBay. Hopefully it works out ok:

Final bits and pieces today getting ready to run the machine. I got rid of the 6mm motor bolts and drilled and re tapped them for 10mm instead. Much sturdier for such a heavy motor.
Also pulled the spindle on the motor drive out as Mal mentioned these get scored. Knowing the general condition of this lathe I was expecting some damage, however was pleasantly surprised to find no scoring at all. The spindle has a load of brown sticky oil on it which probably has kept it in good condition, however it's causing some drag, so I'm going to strip it back, clean it up and oil it with some fresh oil when I mount the drive belt this week (when it arrives). I also took the time to put the red washers on the spindle too that I got in my felt kit.

Sending an email over to CDCO in the US to get some pricing on some items for the lathe. Wondering if people could answer a few questions I have:
1. What is the tailstock size for buying a live centre? I assume MT3?
2. Looking to buy some HSS cutting blanks, is this the right size? 3/32(T) x 1/2(H) x 4-1/2
3. I was going to buy 4 cutting blanks, RH cutting, LH cutting, Facing, Cutt Off (anyone suggest otherwise)?
Cheers.

The Tailstock is M/T 2.
You are better off trying to buy square HSS pieces rather than rectangular.
The pieces you are referring too,are they pre ground HSS or are they tool holders that you put the HSS into.

Lathe Help
Thanks for the tailstock info pipeclay. Good to know.
Those HSS blanks were cutting steel (that you grind I assume).

Those sets of tools are indexable carbide.
They are not HSS.
The HSS tool that you listed suits a parting blade holder either sold by CDCO or made by yourself.
Did you want to use HSS or Carbide for your machining.

Lathe Help
Found something a bit better in Sydney for not much more. Plan on using HSS despite having carbide bits (got them with the lathe!). Seems like the old Hercus won't spin up fast enough to really use the carbide.
Been reading up on HSS tool making which seems like a good skill to learn and a good place to start.

Lathe Help
It's alive:
http://youtu.be/-DSOF4zC_MA
No idea if it's working properly or if I'm doing anything wrong but I thought I would run it for a moment at least to see it turn. It's smooth and quiet in normal speed but rattles a tiny bit in back gear, makes a bit more noise in back gear under load too.
Need to find right torque settings for headstock bolts and then a backyard way of getting the spacers right. I have a dial indicator but no idea how to measure the right force on a bar in the spindle as I don't have any gauge that would work for that. Any advice?
