When they are run without lubricants, the spindle galls up badly. That doesnt look like it has been run without lube, it looks like there was contaminated (with water) oil put in there at some point. There appears to be a little galling inside the pulley itself, but I reckon the rust happened first and then the galling there happened because of it. Dont get too carried away with polishing the spindle, making the clearance really sloppy will accelerate wear as much as having a rough, pitted surface. A run over it with some P800 wet and dry would be as far as I go.

The pulley / bullwheel pin is fine, they dont need to be super tight, otherwise youll never get the pin in the hole.

    Hi,

The spindle shaft has a small shoulder worn into it on the LH side as you look at it, not much I can do about it. I'll just clean it up some more and put it back together.

What I'm wondering is, should I pull out the back gear shaft and give it a clean up? Or put her back together and get on with it?

    Ben.

Youre in there and its not running...may as well do the job completely. I dont imagine it will be real bad in there though, the gear only takes lateral load from the pressure angle of the gears pushing it away. The main pulleys have the tension of the belt adding to the load. In any event, its not real hard, just got to find the grub screws and pull it all out. On the right hand side of the headstock, there is a small bronze piece, a spring and then a grub screw. That setup provides the resistence to the back gear eccentric to stop it from just flopping back while its running. The other end has the depth stop for the eccentric, which comes out towards the back of the machine. I think, once those two groups of components are out, the eccentric and the rod in the middle of it will come out. Watch for that bronze piece though, you wont be able to get it up the hole in which it lives, itll just fall out when you remove the shaft. Just stick your finger in there as it the shaft is removed and catch it. The spring will probably come down behind it too if you couldnt fish it up from above.

One other thing, when youre putting all this back together - DONT FORGET THE BELT. its really funny when you forget to put the belt back on and you get all these pieces lubricated and back in like so...then you have to pull it all apart again and stick that f'ing thing back in there. Ask me how I know this happens...

    Well,

I had some time today so i've put the backgear back in, I didn't get a photo but on the first attempt I put it in the wrong way around! I thought something looked amiss.

Rectified the problem though when I tried putting the spindle and bull gear in etc...

I've nearly got the spindle back in. Was interrupted by my youngest. Just got to tighten up the take up-nut and done! Hopefully it all works.

I bought that Super Lube, smeared it on.

Have fun getting that little brass pad to get into its little hole straight. Maybe its just me, but the little bastard just did not want to go down on anything other than its side!

Other than that, looks like its doing well

    Hi,

Finally got everything back together on the lathe!! I've only run it for a couple of minutes and didn't experience any abnormal heat build up, noise or vibrations. I've yet to put in under any load, hopefully soon.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice.

    Ben.
