Hi Mal,i just picked up an old 9" model C
    C6758
Matching bed and tailstock numbers. Got it for a steal! ($300) Bunch of tooling, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, jacobs chuck and live center.
I will be on the hunt for some change gears and steadies though (scottyd do you still have spares???). It has been converted to single phase, which is a shame (if anyone wants to swap setups with 3 phase, let me know!)
And has been "restored" at some point in the past...

There will be a pile of 3 phase star wound motors, left over from conversions, in my storeage. You are welcome to one if that will do.

    Hi Mal,
I have a Model C no 1908 (somewhere in the 40's I think. I have the original shipping invoice, sent by ship from Adelaide to Melbourne to McPhersons. I am the third owner.
I have made many modifications to the lathe including a countershaft clutch, a slotted cross slide from my own pattern, a taper turning attachment, rear toolpost, a copy of a South Bend lever operated tailstock with 6 station turret and single phase motor.I have 3 4-jaw chucks 2 3-jaw chucks and a recent aquisition a 4-jaw self centring chuck.. It is standing on cast legs (which are probably from a different lathe. I have spent a lot of time to align the lathe and it can turn within a thou over 15 inches. There is negligible wear in the bed but the tailstock base has been machined and shimmed. New half nuts were fitted. I have both sets of change gears, metric and Imperial (8 tpi leadscrew). A brilliant lathe. Regards, Borriss

    Welcome Borriss,
Your 1947 built Hercus makes only 24 from the 460 built that year, currently registered on the AMH database. Great to see you have been so active with your machine. If the legs are like the picture attached, they are probably genuine. Judging by the amount of owners who have sent me photos of their machines, they seem to have continued offering cast iron legs as an option into the late 50's and possibly early 60's.

    Hi Mal,
The legs are similar to those pictured but do not have a straight crossbar but rather a circular ring spaced in the middle. I drilled and tapped the feet and put jacking bolts in to use to straighten the bed and level the machine. I also put some RHS tubing between the legs and the lathe drip tray to bring the machine up to a level I am comfortable working at.
Just for those that do not know the RGE in the circle on the tail end of the bed was the initials of R.G. Excel who was quality control inspector. He also signed all the test sheets supplied with the machines.
    Cheers,
    Borriss

I see the name R.G. Excel from time to time here, would his first name have been Rex? The reason that I ask, is that at the Day Centre where I help out, we had a Rex Excel there, as it's an unusual name just wondering if it's the same. Unfortunately I can't ask him, as he passed away about 5 months ago.

Thanks for that Mal, I found that out on Sunday when I was doing a BBQ at the local Bunning, and was talking to a bloke that did his apprenticeship at Hercus.
When I get my lathe home, he'll come around and check it out for me.
Do you have any of the rotary switches or the handles? Are the three and single phase units the same?
    Thanks
    Kryn

    Default Help with serial number.

Apologies if this is wrong thread, feel free to move if it is.
I've got a model A lathe, but can't find a serial number anywhere ? The only plate on it is one with metric thread conversions on (which as model A stamped on). It's an ex New Zealand Dept of Education machine.
Would there be anything stamped anywhere?

On my 9A, the serial number is stamped at the right hand end of the bed, on the horizontal surface between the two rear vee ways.

    AAH, found it !
Number is A6301, there is an inspectors stamp RGB as well. Based on another you have dated I'm guessing this would be mid '60s ?
