Hercus/Douglas Shaper manuals?
Hi All
After buying a Hercus "o" mill cheaply and doing up as a TAFE prodject that worked out great ( dare i say looks dammm good!! ) for a mature student on a disability pension getting me a good pass on a fitting and machining course,So good that the people who sold me the mill sold me a Hercus / Douglas shaper for nearly nothing!!! Although it is so simple to overhaul I still sounding out the possibility that someone may have a manual or sales paperwork for a 280 mm stroke shaper. Thanks in advance , Billy

I haven't seen any manual on the so-called Model 270.
However I made a list of the differences I discovered from the ealier Douglas shaper.
----------------------------------------------------
Gearbox instead of stepped pulley for stroke speed.
Helical bull gear
Metric
Stroke scale on opposite side of ram
Stroke scale in centimeters, max 28
Ram has Hercus cast on the side, Douglas chrome badge on opposite to usual side
Acme thread on toolpost
Parallel pin rather than taper pin on clapper box
Movable graduated ring on topslide
Different arrangement of slotted table mounting
Round bar with hole to clamp slotted table
Slotted table has v-slot, like early Douglas
No hole for switchgear in base
3 switches: ON-OFF-JOG built into body
No clutch on 270
Manual crank for ram position, with square end for spanner, and safety microswitch.
Different nut at base of vertical screw, looks like the Hercus Model O mill type
Front of body is more enclosed, so less swarf can go down behind
Different clamping arrangement for vertical slide
Lantern type tool holder takes larger tooling
Heavier, bigger ratchet plunger
-----------------------
Advert is from 1988 Hare & Forbes catalog.

Don't get too excited. There's not much to it. A few typed pages and some line drawings.
Billy, send me a private message with your postal address and I'll sort something out for you. JP, I know your address.

Did you find that at Hercus Adelaide?

Well I received the Hercus 270 Shaper Instruction Book and Spare Parts book.
They are brief but quite interesting and informative.
Thanks Bob!

Thanks All !!!!
Sorry about the delay in answering but the " speed bumps in the road in life " type of thing.
To Nadroj Jordan- it seems to have a mixture of everything you listed ( ?? ) still looking into.
To Anorak Bob -Thanks very much as it will be a great help as well as the current series of articles about using shapers in the english " Model Engineers Workshop "

Thanks to Bob
Thanks Bob for supplying the Hercus 270 manuals to me also.
I have aquired a 270 which is currently being overhauled. I'd be interested to know how many 270's are out there.
