    Default Milling Machine from Hercus

Thought I would share this link to an old Horizontal Mill that was being sold by Hercus. No doubt many of the lathes we own were the product of some time on the table of this beauty.
Seeing machinery like this always makes me wonder about the size of the machine that made this one.

    Default Big Mill

Just trying to figure if it would fit into the workshop,& then wondering what I would machine with it.

ps Do not think chatter or vibration would be a problem.

Straight 8 cylinder heads should be no problem.
This mill featured in the "Company Profile" brochure a few years ago, describing its machining capacity. It must have been an important machine, so could indicate a winding back of operations at Hercus I guess.
I wonder if many people took advantage of the 260 refurbishment service that they offerred a couple of years back? Starting at $3200 +GST, it was not cheap but less than a new one used to cost by a fair bit. We might look back one day and regret not doing it!

I can't imagine even getting close to putting any wear on the bed that would require regrinding.
I think there is a grinder in the background of some of those photos.
By the way Bruce, sorry but I am busy that weekend when you want to unload that mill and slide it in.

I could think of worse ways to spend $5,000... Absolutely fantastic. They just don't make them like that any more.
But the problem is you'd need a very large workshop to house the thing.

So lets say you bought it and had it set up ready to go. Imagine what you could do with it

They are a production machine that you cannot do a lot with outside of basic milling.... Pretty much worth scrap value these days...

what's needed is a wealthy person to buy up these wonderful machines when they are still in good nick. A place to store them for posterity, a museum?
