Default My NEW Hercus 260 Lathe

Just thought I would contribute a couple of photo's of my Hercus 260 lathe which I just picked up today.

Just interested to know the significance of the Model number also.
It is marked as BTM 15895.

I have seen quite a few references to ATM and CTM models but not a BTM, does anyone know what it signifies.

    regards

    Jeremy

The B represents a change gear model with powered longitudinal and cross feed through a friction clutch.

Thankyou gentlemen, that info is a great help.

On another subject, is anyone aware of a surplus to requirements, tailstock barrel to suit a 260 tailstock, I have managed to source all of the missing components for my tailstock, except the barrel sleeve for the unit.

Yeah I got all of the other pieces for the tailstock from AMH but there were no tailstock barrells available, I will try Hercus in Adelaide on Monday and see what they have. I am sure they could probably make one for me, but I bet the cost would be prohibitive??

    Thanks John

Excuse my ignorance, but are hercus still manufacturing spares for there series of lathes or would all the parts just be New Old Stock that they have left from manufacturing?

as far as i know hercus still provide spares and refurbishment of the 260 lathe but not earlier models( but some parts are interchangeable) . there are still many 260 models being used today in schools / colleges etc
suggest you ring them for further info

    Hello Jeremy,

Following our discussion the other night, I was expecting to see some garishly painted beater. The lathe doesn't look bad at all. The only thing missing now is a gearbox.

Being an ex school machine, do the tailstock and bed serial numbers match? Sadly, there was a tendency for them to be swapped about resulting sometimes in non alignment of the spindles.

    G'day Bob
Yeah it looks ok from a distance, the headstock top cover and the headstock endcover are covered in graffitti scratched into the paintwork, right down to the aluminium in some spots. I have stripped and painted the top cover and it has come up quite well, the end cover is next and so on.
Thankfully all the numbers match from the headstock, bed and tailstock so I am hoping that half the battle is won in the alignment stakes??!!

    Cheers

    Jeremy
