Hercus 260 motor foot mounting type
Anyone know what the foot mounting type is as used on the Hercus 260?
Am in need of a single phase motor to fit to a Hercus 260 and am trying to find what is available...Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

My 260 has a single phase Teco type BEGYBS 1/2hp 4pole motor with frame B71, foot mounting bolts at 90mm and 112mm apart.
It has bulky enclosures for the capacitors and terminals, and fitting it was a real squeeze. A more compact motor would have been less trouble, so watch out for that.

The ones that I have fitted go on,the only modification that I have had to do was open the elongated holes in the motor mount feet by around 1mm.

RC,
Depends on which machine it is. The 260ATM used 3/4 or 1hp motors with 80b-4pole configuration. The 260CTM used a 1/2 hp 71b-4 pole, all the ones I have seen used Asea 3 phase motors with the same motor frame specs as the CMG range , check the CMG website for dimensions.

ahh well they do not "just bolt on"...
The foot mountings are totally different... As expected the shaft is a different size...
I drilled and tapped new foot mountings, and then of course the motor does not fit in the allotted space... Going to have to bush the pulley and make up a custom mounting block for the motor..

RC,
Unfortunate your motor doesn't fit but as you can see I have the same motor on my 260CTM(later modified to an ATM) and it required no modification and neither have any of the 15 or so I have added for others hercus owners. I can only assume the previous owner modified your motor with an aftermarket one.

The motor is genuine... I have the new one fitted now, had to jack it out 20mm and countersink one allen bolt on the motor to clear the casting, then drop it down 12mm to get some adjustment...
I compared this area on this lathe to my other Hercus 260 and the castings are different.... On the newer one there is a much larger area cut out for the motor clearance...Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

motor
RC,
It seems you are right about the motor being original, one of the same type showed up today, thats only the second one I've heard of so far. Just for future reference, is the frame style noted on your old motor plate, maybe I can locate a good match from another motor supplier in case someone else has a similar arrangement.
The b71(1/2hp), b80(1hp) or b90(1.5hp) are the most numerous ones I've seen so far. None of the replacement CMG motors are 75mm X 125mm.
Thanks Mal

Hi Mal, No idea what the frame size it, it does not say on the plate.... It is an imperial motor with 5/8 shaft... I am suspicious the foot plate will be 3" X 5"
I have bored out the pulley and bushed the shaft with a 14mm (5mm key) bush (press fit with loctite for good measure, it is not going anywhere)..I have calculated I will need an A33 belt to fit..
I can probably do a writeup on the mods I made to make it fit if needed...Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

RC,
I've had to enlarge the hole in the casting to take the newer motors on the ATM's on some machines in the past and sleeve or bore out pulleys on a few as well. Thank god the bolt patterns have been the same.
It's a shame they don't make a single phase motor of the same proportions as the 3 phase. There seem to be a lot of different casting shapes in the ATM models.
I'll be setting up a single phase motor on one of the 260DGM's shortly (which came with a CMG 1.5hp 3 phase), curious to see what problems I come across.

Hi All,
I purchased a 1HP CMG Motor from Mal, doesn't quite fit my 260 ATM. Will have to tap at least two holes in the frame, bore out pulley to 19mm and broach a keyway, enlarge the casting and possibly cut out 10mm from guard.
Doesn't seem to difficult but time will tell.
