    Exclamation Hercus Textbook of Turning

    Hi Guys,

It's been slow going on my Hercus 9C restoration, I got the changeover reground bed from Mal quite some time ago, but I'm getting there.
I finally bought a great little surface plate, and I have been teaching myself scraping in preparation for having all the dovetails re cut maybe next week.
I spent several weeks looking at all the surface plate options as I didn't really want to spend a lot of dough for something I might use very occasionally.
In the end I bought one of these https://www.carbatec.com.au/granite-surface-plate a bargain at AU$87. they are )) grade and come with a certification diagram.

I have applied the Turcite to the saddle, and (pull) scraped it, and I have scraped the top of the compound to about 25 points, quite happy with that.
A parting tool was the perfect size to re cut the groove in the bottom of the vees.

I have repainted the cabinet, and am currently fitting two drawers to the top shelf.
In case you were wondering, I am painting the lathe in hammer-tone (again) the same colour as my hoist and some other gear.

Some time back I managed to pick up a bad lung infection, so I have had a lot of indoor recovery time, I have put this to some use by reproducing and editing the Hercus textbook of turning.
So it took about four days of work in Photoshop and Nuance PDF to get these results, and produce a document that can be manually double side printed on your average printer.
Because it is impossible to print the original book scan double sided (the pages come out way out of order) I had to split the scanned double pages into singles, then assemble and clean up in PS and print back to PDF, a lot of work.
So in the end I have created two versions, one is full sized A4, and the other is approximately the size of the original handbook.

If you wish to print either of these as a proper book you can just do a "Manual duplex" print and set it to "Flip on the left edge", the process should be similar in most printers.
Once all pages are printed on one side turn them over as instructed by the printer and it will print the other side, all pages will be in the correct order.
You can bind the A4 version straight off the printer, but the hand book pages will need to be cut to size before binding. I suggest setting the printer to print cut lines if available.

Just noticed I don't seem to be able to upload the two PDF attachments, is there a size limit? They are 73.4Mb and 54.7Mb respectively, am I missing something?
I can email them directly if requested.
Also can someone advise how to delete old unused files (pics) from my upload folder?

    Cheers
    Tex

    Hi,

As I have mentioned in the past I bought a large piece of Turcite at a good price from OS, and I only need a fairly small amount. I should be in a position to offer what I have left over in the near future.
    I will post something then.

I am still getting my head around how all the various bits of this forum work, so I think you will need to send me a "Private" email? so I can email that doc to you.
I still haven't heard from anyone re. not being able to upload the two PDF's.

    Cheers

    Hi Tex,

I'm sending you a PM with a link with a "file request". You can upload them to my Dropbox account and I will figure out how to make them public.

Thanks for your work to create these documents.

    Cheers

PS not many email servers will accept a 70MB file. (that I am aware of)

    Default Hercus Manuals

    Okay boys and girls,

I figured out how to create a shared folder on my Dropbox account, and have uploaded 4 files to it and have created this link so you should be able to go directly to it and download the pdf files.

Could somebody test it for me and make sure it works properly?

When Tex uploads his files to me they will appear in that folder as well.

    Cheers

    Paul

Big Thank You to Tex260Z for sending me the files. I have uploaded them and added the suffix Tex260Z to them so you know which ones are the high res versions.

Click on the link to access them.

Could Members PLEASE refrain from using "REPLY WITH QUOTE" when comenting on something on the same page. It makes the threads unneccesarily long.
    Thanks,
    Kryn.
