Happy Birthday to my 260
My Hercus 260 BTMH was 25yo in October 2010, based on the date
on the inspection sheet.
So I am a little late with the present....
Every component stripped inspected and replaced with new, as required.
All paint stripped from every component and repainted (sorry, green is for lawn mowers) No, it is not original now. (much better.)
While the components were off the bed, it was sent to Hercus to be ground.
The result is in the attached photos.
Please note that you cannot judge the true colour of an item on the internet.
I foolishly ordered the paint from a colour chart online. (doh!)
It turned out for the better when I managed to obtain tints to alter it to the hue/shade I wanted. (viz; Paula's South Bend 9" on Practical Machinist)
I wish to thank the members here for the information and inspiration and also the people at Hercus.
If you are about to work on your Hercus lathe I can recommend the book; A Guide to Renovating the South Bend Lathe 9" Model A, B&C & Model 10k
It is an invaluable source of information most relating directly to the Hercus machines and includes information not available elsewhere.(Copies available online)
So here it is (and as purchased last year).....(just have to set it up now!!)

Outstanding job Graham.
Find an old metal baking tray to place under the bed near the chuck to protect the nicely painted tray and more importantly, to make cleaning easier. Don't use plastic because the swarf will melt into it and cut your hand when you try to clean it off.
As for "green for lawnmowers", we'll have to disagree.
Bob.

Looking good.
You have a T-slot on the compound slide - unusual.
I wouldn't mind one like that for my 260. Anybody got one to spare?

Beautiful work Graeme.
I use a hard plastic tray which makes it easier to clean with a magnet and I also keep some newspaper on the tray when not in use to catch all the oil that invariably leaks.
I usw a 2" bristle paintbrush (proper bristle not poly) to sweep everything down when I'm done, keeps all the swarf from finding it's way to where it really shouldn't be.
This is the first time I've seen the carriage stop fitted, do you know what the extra holes on the attachment are for?
Again, a top job, well done.
Cheers,
Greg.

Thanks Greg,
No, can only guess about the holes, probably travelling chip guard, maybe light or coolant?
Regards

Maintaining the pristine appearance.
For what it is worth, I use a Shop Vac Classic 30, with a soft rubber Nilfisk nozzle jammed onto the hose, to clean everything off my machines. Sucks swarf out of chucks, out of spindles, off leadscrews, out of the hollow feet under the lathe bed and on and on. I hold the nozzle next to the cutter when I'm machining cast iron. Works perfecty and unlike compressed air, doesn't drive swarf and grit into unwelcome places.
Sadly, the only catch is Bunnies used to sell them. Mine is a Yank model. They were replaced by Chinese made versions then deleted from the range a few years ago.
A vacuum cleaner and a roll of paper towel are hard to beat when it comes to keeping your machine clean.

Accessories
Graeme,
I have a high resolution scanned copy of the 260 accessory brochure that I can wire to you if you are interested. You can see what fits in those holes.

What a magnificent restoration - looks brand new. Reading your post initially before scrolling down to the pics, was worried you were going to paint it Triton yellow, esp when green was under discussion ( and discarded)
regards,
Jill

The only improvement
Would be a gearbox. Ring Steve D and ask him whether he has a spare one gathering dust in some long forgotten corner.

Finnowa,
Mate, that is one hell of a restoration job. Obviously you are single with no kids, cause, these things take time, lots of time. No interuptions like "Graeme, can you do the dishes".
Well done, it's a credit to you. I hope this lathe takes prime position in the living room well away from swarf, dust and rust. Without a missus, you can do this.
Most of my partly restored 9" AR, is inside.

Come on Ken,
the Arboga off and finish your AR! You could have bowled most of the work over while you've been waiting for that VFD
