Resto of A model in SA
Hi All
Thought I'd just post a few photos of my model A that I'm fixing up. Started by perstering a guy at work to sell it to me and is ending up a labour of love now. I've cleaned up the whole thing and slowly painting and putting back together with some much appreciated technical advice from Bitza500 (thanks Derek). Have tackled quite a few repairs on all sorts of things over the years but this is my first Lathe quite enjoying it but looking forward to actually being able to use it. Have added an as found photo as well.
Motor and spindle are on, painted headstock last night hope to put that together with Dereks new felts tonight then I have to tackle the saddle or gearbox felts next.
Thanks
Darren

Hi Darren,
Looking good..
If you really want to aspire to machine tool - check out Paula's restoration of her South Bend 9a.

There is plenty of good advice in there - and the pictures are not bad either

Thanks Rodd
She has definatly taken that restoration up a notch from mine that saddle I couldn't believe it it actually looked like a brand new one. I got my head stock back on and turning actually used it to hold the graduated wheel off the cross slide to file the burr off so even a lathe with no gearbox saddle or tailstock is usefull for something. Here is another photo of tonights effort. I stripped the saddle tonight so will take to work and clean it in the parts washer and then paint it tomorrow night.

Hi its a bit of a mixture actually I picked up 3 1litre tins of solver scarlet and one 1ltr of International red and MIxed them together to paint my trailer a few years ago this was the left over. Any bright red should be fine that was good quality machinery paint but I know that Bitza500 uses a red spray tin for that bit. Just for the record the green is British paint botanical retreat. I did contemplate yellow for inside the bed but stuck to the red.
I've got the cross slide and compound slide back on now and adjusted the gibs I'm going to make up a spacer for the cross slide to take away the slack in it. Bit cold in Adelaide at the moment so going out in the shed at night is a bit harder than normal.
Thanks Darren

Update
Just a quick up date. gearbox is now in bits I've a few worn shafts but hopefully it'll be OK if you have a cheap A box let me know. Also I've started the wireing for the forward reverse single phase and the contactor (see photos) I'll put a wiring diagram in later showing the way I've done it (if it works) I'm using the non reversing contacts from the forward reverse switch to power the control cct hopefully if you switch from forward to reverse the contactor will drop out and you will have to press the start button again to get it to change direction.
