Default Hercus Model A Bull Gear

    Dear All

I discovered today that I have a missing tooth on my Model A 75 tooth bull gear. Of course I thought immediately that the previous owner had abused the machine in some way but I checked under the machine just in case and there it was..the broken tooth. I have no memory of doing the wrong thing but there it is...I broke it. Seems to run alright on the back gear (makes a slightly different noise when the gap runs past the drive gear). Should I be worried? Can I get a replacement?

    Default thanks Pipeclay

A new one would be nice to keep the machine in best working order. How much and how do I order?

A Back Gear that I make is $121,
The Repairs make them virtually as good as new.
The cost of the Large gear would be $55 or $ 40 if you provide the replacement gear ring.
The cost of repair for the small gear is $50The above prices dont include postage.
There are also members on this forum that have repaired there own gears.
I think these repairs were done by brazing the broken tooth back in position and finish filing.
I think another method is also to drill and pin the damaged area.
These repair options may be an option for you to try and could also be cheaper.
Also another member on this forum also does repairs Bittza his prices may be less than mine.
Hope you find a suitable solution.
With the repairs that I do they are usually 1 day turn around depending on the shifts that I am working, with a new one allow 3/5 days.

Just read your other post,is the Gear in question the one that is attached to the Mian Spindle shaft.
This is the gear Directly behind the Chuck, this is called the Bull Gear, the gears shaft at the rear of the Main Spindle is called the BackGear.
If it is the Bull Gear that is damaged the repair cost would be $77 or $42 if you prepare the Gear with a replacement blank and I just cut the Teeth.

It is the gear on the main shaft. I counted teeth carefully again and it is 75 tooth. I am thinking about best option re new or repaired gear

I miss read your earlier post and thought you were reffering to the back gear.
I dont make new Bull Gears I only repair the damaged ones.
If you are after a new one you could try Hercus they may have them but I wouldnt like to guess as to what they may charge, also it may be hard to get an 9" Bullgear from them,I think they may only have if available 260 Bullgears.

Default New or rebuilt back gear

Hi David, as I am still on the crook list I have purchased a couple of back gears and Bullgears of Peter (Pipeclay) and he does a absolute ripper job of reringing the gears as I have 2 lathes both with rebuilt back gears and bullgears all done by Peter

They are like new and once painted up you could never tell the difference except you save some money

Peter's work is second to Non he is what you would call a Quality Trasesman who takes his work very seriously

Ask all the owners what they think as Peter has done a lot of gears and has never had a complaint

Peter is the type of person who you can rely on to always get the job done PROPERELY the first time and you will be very happy with his quality of work

all the best Derek aka Bitza500

Thanks Derek, with that rap, difficult to go past Peter.
Hi Peter, I will talk to Hercus and see what they have and depending on the outcome I may call on your repair skills.
Thanks to all for your help and advice.

to complete this story, I managed to obtain a new (second hand) bull gear. I pulled headstock spindle apart - it required more than "tapping" as suggested in Hercus book...Had to strike the left hand end of the spindle (suitably protected) and use the headstock casting to force the bullgear off the shaft. I was nervous as I have a poor record with hammers and cast iron. I reassembled the spindle and pressed the bullgear onto the shaft by using a long bolt down the centre of the spindle and a correctly sized piece of pipe to push against the pulley that in turn pushed against the bull gear. Bits fitted with pleasingly tight fit. I am always amazed how industry manages to repeat these tolerances over and over to make replaceable parts that fit. I hope I can develop the skills to produce parts to pre-determined tolerances. I know I don't have to do this as I do one off things but the discipline is a bit of a journey for me.
