Anyone thinking about loaning their trailer?
Maybe think again…
Spotted this today while waiting for the boss to finish shopping.

The steering would have been VERY light. He's lucky they weren't spotted by the local law keepers.
That's one of the reasons I don't lend them, for that very reason. I used to manage a trailer hire, so I know what happens to them, rated at 2.5 tonne, so they load it up with a 3.5tonne tractor plus a slasher and anything else that'll fit!!!!!!

Did you notice the bend in the drawbar Kryn?
Doesn’t look quite as obvious as it was in person, but if you look closely you can see that the drawbar is pretty much parallel with the ground - but the trailer chassis isn’t.
I’m sure most of us have been guilty of overloading trailers at some stage, and I’ve seen numerous 6x4 trailers over the years - dead on the side of the road due to failed springs or axles. Generally full to the brim with gravel/soil/bricks or bags of cement.
I just can’t fathom what this clown was thinking when he loaded it like that. My first though was that it had been loaded by a forklift so they couldn’t load over the axle due to the wheels/guards stopping the fork getting onto the deck. Doesn’t look like that though, as the load is on the deck below the tie down rail, and its stacked full width across the trailer. Pretty confident it’s been hand loaded.

Actually I didn't till you mentioned it. Very scary, that people think they can get away stuff like that.
The loading by hand seems to be right, they loaded it that way to stop the timber from sliding forward. Certainly wouldn't be doing the front axle assembly any good. I see some trailers come into work, makes you wonder how on earth they managed to bend the axle that way, leaning in at the bottom and toeing to the front by about 25mm!!!!!To grow old is mandatory, growing up is optional.

This is my 8x5 750kg rated trailer.
Late one arvo I was asked by the mens shed to go to a pro cabinet makers to pick up some unwanted MDF.
Th cabinet maker ha a fork lift an picked up this pack and put it onto the trailer.
"Bit much I reckon" I said, "How about splitting the load?"
Cabinet maker was keen to go home.
"How far you got to go"
"5ks"
"She'll be right" he said.
When I got back to the shed I worked out it was 1100kg.

I hear what you're saying but not everyone is like that. I used to privately hire a trailer many times to transport green waste or the odd MDF panel. Never over-loaded the trailer like that. I swept it before bringing it back and always got my deposit back.
Once we hired it for three weeks to go camping, another time I wanted to hire it but a solar panel installer had booked it for weeks. The following year I asked but was told his 8x5 had been stolen. Someone had hired it to move interstate but couldn't be bothered bringing it back. He did replace it eventually and kept loaning it.

In Victoria, at least, it is illegal to have a load beyond the rear of a trailer.

After one of my trailers ended up underneath a road train in a crumpled heap I don’t loan them any more.
Towing should be a seperate endorsement on your license, with weight distribution (aka how to load one) and load restraint incorporated into it.
