Default Single axle tray top rebuild & tipper conversion

I want to re-chassis my trusty traytop. It's been super useful but it was a mistake to use the old Hilux chassis and springs. The tray is too high, the hitch is too low and the springs are too weak for the 1550kg rating. Also, I've acquired a Gough tipper kit so...

Is 100x50x3 ok for chassis and drawbar?

I see ~1500kg spring sets listed in various widths, lengths and leaf counts. How do I choose?

Hi Bryan, Your choice of 100X50X3 for the main frame will be OK as it's a single axle.
For the Springs, I'd look at their capacity first, that then eliminates the likes of 7 leaf slippers and the like as an example. Personally I'd go for the Eye and Eye spring, as that will be similar to the the Hilux suspension, it also gives very little trouble. Then I'd look at the 9 leaf as that will definitely take the weight. You haven't mentioned the axle and wheels that you're wanting to use, or is that open for discussion? For the weight, I'd go for a parallel axle, I think from memory they use the Ford inner bearings on both inner and outers, and electric brakes, that way not many people can borrow the trailer, or if you're prepared to lend it, hydraulics would be ok. Ford bearings, I think are at a max of about 1250kg.
Contact me if you require any further help etc.

Thanks Kryn. Sorry I should have included more info. The trailer already has a parallel axle with electric brakes. Tare is 420, ATM 1550, leaving 1130 net. Not that I've put that much on it. I chicken out at about 700 due to the sag. The tip kit weighs 130, so to keep a 1T payload I'll be aiming to keep the chassis weight similar to the existing one. Once I have springs selected I can start on a drawing and work towards a weight estimate.

The tipper kit is currently on a ute which I'm picking up (purchasing) tomorrow. Once I've had a better look at it I'll have a clearer idea but I'm hoping to design the chassis so the gubbins can sit between the rails and not jack the tray up. My short axle may be my undoing.
